Shabbat Under The Stars
We're looking forward to seeing everyone at our first Shabbat Under The Stars of the summer, this Friday at a special time, 5:30 pm. We'll be celebrating Jerusalem Day with all the activities below. Also, we'll be collecting tzedakah for Israeli organizations, so please bring any loose change (or more) to donate. See you this Shabbat in the ECEC Yard!
Auschwitz or Sinai?
A Short Article In Preparation for Tikkun Leil Shavuot

In preparation for Saturday night's Tikkun Leil Shavuot theme of Am Yisrael Chai, Rabbis Camras and Vogel will begin the tikkun with a conversation about Jewish power, anti-Semitism and life in America. To frame the discussion, we are encouraging you to read this brief article written in 1982 by Rabbi David Hartman entitled "Auschwitz or Sinai?"

Though he is writing for an Israeli audience (and we will discuss similarities and differences between Jewish power exercised by sovereign Israel versus Jewish power as demonstrated by Jews in diaspora), please read the article with the following questions in mind:

  1. What do you think the terms Auschwitz and Sinai mean?
  2. How are they related to each other?
  3. Do you think Rabbi Hartman does a fair job of privileging one over the other?
  4. Is he doing a balanced job addressing both?
  5. Where do you stand if you were going to restate his argument in your own terms?

And as an example to the debate:
If our synagogue had an additional $50,000 to spend, would we better off putting it into upgraded security or additional educational programming?
STS Golf Tournament
The deadline to sign up for the Golf Tournament is this Friday, June 7. If you plan on participating in the tournament either through playing or a sponsorship, you must get in your registration by this Friday's deadline. Thank you.

Cantor Snow Update
Many of you continue to offer prayers and ask for updates as our beloved Cantor Ron Snow is being treated for pancreatic cancer. Ron is so appreciative of the support that he is receiving from his Shomei Torah community. Because the treatments can be hard on Ron’s voice, he is not able to return your phone calls but he is grateful for each of them and the many emails that he has received. Please continue to add his Hebrew name to your prayers for healing – Hazzan Reuven ben Zion ben Chava.
In addition to the many prayers being said on his behalf, the synagogue has an Ezra Fund which was established to provide support for those members going through medical treatments. If you would like to make a donation to help Cantor Snow with his medical costs etc., please donate online to the Ezra Fund or make your checks payable to Shomrei Torah Synagogue Ezra Fund and in the memo include Ron’s name.

If you'd like to make a meal for Cantor Snow, please email Charlie Carter at charlesgarycarter@gmail.com or call him at 818-903-0595.

The Lazer Cohen CosmoTheology Scholar-in-Residence Fund
This fund will allow for an annual speaker event that brings top scholars in the fields of religion, technology and cosmology to share with STS the growing understanding of how these fields complement one another. The Cohen family has graciously offered to raise matching dollars for every dollar raised at Shomrei Torah up to $50,000 to support this fund. If interested please donate here .

It is absolutely critical that we, as the Jewish community of California, do all that we can to ensure our synagogues and schools are safe and secure in the face of rising antisemitism, hate crimes and tragedies like the horrific shooting at the Poway Chabad Synagogue. Luckily, there is something quick and easy that you can do NOW to help . Reach out to leadership in Sacramento and tell them to support Assembly Bill 1548 .
