Shabbat Message

Message from Josh Friedman, President

In this week’s Torah portion Veyechi, we reach the conclusion of Jacob’s story and of the book of Genesis. Prior to his death, Jacob has Joseph promise to have him buried in Canaan. Jacob then gives his blessing to Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Menasseh. As was the case for Jacob and his brother Esau, the younger brother (Ephraim) receives the greater blessing; this concords with the greater prominence of the future Kingdom of Israel, led by the tribe of Ephraim. By giving Joseph’s sons each an inheritance, Jacob effectively gives Joseph a double share. Jacob delivers a series of prophecies regarding all of the brothers, reserving the longest and most positive for Judah and Joseph, again befitting the future kingdoms from each. Jacob dies and is taken to Canaan for burial by the brothers, with an extensive honorary procession from Egypt. After Jacob’s death, the brothers inform Joseph that their father had asked them to remind Joseph not to seek retribution against them. It is ambiguous whether this is true, but Joseph agrees. Finally, Torah records Joseph’s request for his remains to be taken from Egypt when the children of Israel eventually depart, and the book concludes with Joseph’s death. The theme of favoritism spans most of Jacob’s life, from his use of cleverness and deception to usurp Esau’s status as firstborn, to his imbalanced treatment of Joseph, and finally in his granting of Joseph a double share of inheritance. In each case, the outcome is negative: Jacob must flee from Esau, Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery, and in the future the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel will be in conflict. This week, may Jacob’s errors teach us to reflect on our inevitable mistakes and do a better job of learning from them than Jacob. Shabbat Shalom.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13

8:15 AM – Mah Nishtanah? with Cantor Jessica Silverberg

On all other days we read text, so why do we chant Torah?

In this class we will explore the “why” behind chanting Torah and other sacred texts. Topics covered include the history of cantillation, lyrical and grammatical functions of the te’amim, and how to incorporate these into our Torah reading practice. Please note that this is not a class for learning how to chant Torah; basic knowledge of cantillation is recommended but not required.
