The fast of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, known as Shivah Asar B’Tammuz, is the start of a three-week mourning period for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples.

The fast actually commemorates five tragic events that occurred on this date:
  1. Moses broke the tablets when he saw the Jewish people worshipping the Golden Calf.
  2. During the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, the Jews were forced to cease offering the daily sacrifices due to the lack of sheep.
  3. Apostomos burned the holy Torah.
  4. An idol was placed in the Holy Temple.
  5. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans, in 70 CE, after a lengthy siege. (Three weeks later, after the Jews put up a valiant struggle, the Romans destroyed the second Holy Temple on the 9th of Av.)

"The Three Weeks"
The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls out in the summer. This is when we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and our launch into a still-ongoing exile.

The period begins on the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, a fast day that marks the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans in 69 CE.
It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people.

Prayers for the injured and missing residents of Surfside

Overnight on June 24th, 2021 at the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, FL there was a catastrophic building collapse encompassing over half of the building. There are currently 99 people unaccounted for ranging from young children to senior citizens as well as countless families that now have no homes. This is a horrible tragedy and we pray for the immediate rescue of those missing and injured.

A hotline has been set up by Hatzalah of South Florida for family members concerned about their loved ones: 847-322-1422.

The Chesed Fund and Shul of Bal Harbour have launched a campaign to raise relief funds for residents: https://thechesedfund.com/shulofbalharbour/miamitragedy

Reb Shlomo Carlebach zt"l on Parshas Balak
(Via Stuie Wax)

Sweetest friends, I want you to know the deepest depths. What gives me the strength to pray before G-d? What happens to me when I pray? Basically, what is prayer all about? Open your hearts in the deepest way. You know why I am standing before G-d and praying? Because it’s clear to me that I am special to G-d. And despite everything wrong I am doing, all my wrongdoings cannot take away this unbelievable specialness which exists between me and G-d.

Now listen to this. It’s so strange. When G-d punishes, he punishes by showing you how you did wrong. Balak and Bilaam want to tear out the specialness from the world. So G-d punishes them by giving them a special, special granddaughter who will bring back to the world how special it is. What will happen when Messiah comes? It will be revealed to us how special everything is. So who is his grand daughter it is Ruth, the great grandmother of King David, the progeny of Mashiach, who will really make the world one. One day, the world will really be one and everyone will feel so special.
Let it be now!

Good Shabbos!
