RABBI ELAN SEGELMAN SPEAKS ON FERTILITY AND HALACHA AT LINK

Rabbi Elan Segleman, the Rav of Young Israel Hancock Park and the Los Angeles director of PUAH, gave a fascinating talk on "Fertility in Halacha" on Memorial Day, May 25th at the LINK Kollel. Using his expertise in the area of fertility treatments (which Puah has made accessible to the frum community), Rabbi Segelman discussed several Halachic issues that arise in IVF treatments. These included utilizing Hashgachah to guarantee the integrity of potential embryos, issues arising with treatments on Shabbos and Yom Tov, and how to test male fertility without being in violation of Halachic norms. They also spoke about new areas of research in genetics and DNA that might be helpful in advancing the chances for fertility. The presentation, which was for men and women, is part of LINK's ongoing Legal Holiday Series focusing on contemporary Halachic issues.

HOT OFF THE PRESS!

Rabbi Daniel Weinstock, who joined LINK in 2004 and has never really left, has just published an English version of his Hebrew magnus opus on Emunah (Horaisa L’Daas). It is entitled Understanding Emunah, and it is an encyclopedic compendium of classic writings on Emunah spanning the last 2000 years of Torah sages. Besides defining what Emunah is, he advances strategies of how to make Emunah real – tangible, that we can feel in our bones. He goes through extensive “proofs” for the authenticity of the Torah as well as offering strategies of how we can internalize these powerful pillars of our faith. He also delineates stratagems for fighting the Yetzer Hara’s well-known tactics that endeavor to engender doubts within us about the veracity of our beliefs. The Hebrew version has already been acclaimed as a modern classic, and now the English version is available to Jews of all backgrounds. It may not yet be at your local bookstore, but one can preorder it at Feldheim.com.
