SHABBOS MEVORCHIM CHODESH NISSAN
This week is Shabbos Mevorchim Chodesh Nissan and Parshas HaChodesh. We bentch Rosh Chodesh Nissan this Shabbos. Rosh Chodesh is one day, this coming Thursday (we omit Tachanun for the whole month of Nissan). This is also the last of the four special Maftir leinings this time of the year, known as Parshas HaChodesh. The Maftir is read from Sefer Shemos 12:1-20. This is always read the Shabbos before Rosh Chodesh Nissan (or if Rosh Chodesh is on Shabbos, it is read that Shabbos). It contains the first Mitzvah given to the entirety of the Jewish people, while still in Egypt.
TWO MINYANIM FRIDAY NIGHT
Now that we have turned the clocks one hour ahead, we will begin to offer the option of an “early Shabbos.” The first Minyan each week will be approximately 15 minutes before Plag (this week starting at 5:30). We accept Shabbos once we say “Mizmor Shir L’Yom HaShabos.” According to Rav Moshe Feinstein, ZT”L, since we are doing this primarily for convenience, women are not obligated to take in Shabbos when their husbands do in shul, and they can light at the regular time. The second Minyan, as usual, will begin Mincha approximately 15 minutes before Shkiah, this week at 6:45pm.
