HALACHA CORNER

Hilchos Shabbosby R’ Mordechai Lebhar , שליט"א  author Magen Avot, Rosh Kollel Link Kollel Los Angeles - Redacted by Dr. Emile Amzallag

What is considered a meal with regards to Kiddush?

The Shulchan Aruch (O.H. 273:5) writes that Kiddush must be followed by a meal, which in this context must consist of at least a small amount of bread or a revi’it of wine. Fruit on their own, on the other hand, would not be considered a meal for this purpose. Indeed, the Vilna Gaon (Maaseh Rav #122) rules strictly and says that one must eat bread after Kiddush.

Nevertheless, the Chida (Birke Yosef, § 273) writes that food whose blessing is mezonot would also be valid as a meal. Not only does the Chida permit mezonot which have the form of bread and if eaten in sufficient quantities, necessitate the blessing of hamotzi (such as sweet rolls, danishes, etc.), but even mezonot which can never be hamotzi such as noodles or fried items. The Chida’s rationale is that the after-blessing of Mezonot, that is, Al Hamiya, must be said in the same place as in which one ate, and thus one is considered anchored enough to that spot to be considered as having had a set meal. Thus, one would be able to follow Kiddush with Yerushalmi Kugel or Couscous, for example.

Rice requires the blessing of Mezonot but its after-blessing is Borei Nefashot, and therefore, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef (Yabia Omer , vol. VII, Orah Haim, § 35) rules that rice does not have sufficient permanence to be considered a meal.

Summary: The custom is that any type of Mezonot, whose after-blessing is Al Hamichya, is considered a valid Seuda for the purposes of Kiddush.

Many Thanks

A man who prayed in the same minyan with the Chofetz Chaim noticed that the Chofetz Chaim’s davening was going on and on for a long time. He asked the Chofetz Chaim, “Why is your tefillah so long?”

The Chofetz Chaim responded, “It is because of the bracha of “Modim” (thanksgiving).  How can I count all of Hashem’s kind ways? There is so much to thank Hashem for! As the verse in the  Nishmat prayer says, וְאִלּוּ פִינוּ מָלֵא שִׁירָה כַיָּם... אֵין אֲנַחְנוּ מַסְפִּיקִין לְהוֹדוֹת לְךָ ד' אֱלֹקינוּ. וּלְבָרֵךְ אֶת שִׁמְךָ מַלְכֵּנוּ - and if our mouths were full of song like the sea…we could not sufficiently thank you Hashem, our G-d, and bless Your Name, our King’).”

Kiddush Levana

The latest time to perform Kiddush Levana of this month is Tuesday night at 6:06pm.

Change Back to Standard Time

This Motzei Shabbos we turn the clock back one hour to Pacific Standard Time.  That means that the early Mincha minyan will now be at 12:35pm, Sunday thru Friday (with an additional minyan Sundays at 1:05pm). The only other minyan for Mincha will be around 15 minutes before sundown (at 4:40 this week). There will be an additional late Maariv minyan Monday through Thursday night at 7:45 (besides 9:35, 10:30 and 11:15).

A Blast From The Past

We welcome Mrs. Ami (Saidi) Hizkiya, who is joining us this Shabbos, visiting from Telshe Stone (just outside Yerushalayim, where her husband Denny is home watching the kids). Ami was LINK’s first Administrative Secretary when we began in September 2002, using the facilities of the Westwood Kehilla (where Ami was doing double duty as their Administrative Secretary as well). We hope she enjoys seeing the fruits of her pioneering labor!

Construction Update

As you may have noticed recently, the LINK building is undergoing some major construction in order to extend the second floor and add two new classrooms and an outdoor (covered) patio. In order to facilitate this new expansion, the kitchen and the YPLA room will need to temporarily have their ceilings removed. Thus, for the next two weeks, they will be inaccessible.  Please bear with us as we build a bigger, better LINK facility!

Formula Gemach

With a huge national formula shortage we have made a formula gemach with drop off locations in the city and valley for kosher unexpired and unopened bottles of formula, donations (some formulas people are desperately seeking are a fortune now online) and we have started to match people up.  The gemach is up and running in the valley now, it is in zechus refua sheelima Shayna Lia bas Shulamis a young mother in Pico.  Please text 310 981 8553 or email formulagemachla@gmail.com if you need formula or can donate.
