December 2021
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your previous contributions to the Haddam Historical Society. Your support has helped us weather the past two difficult years of Covid-19 and related shut-downs and cancellations. The Society has continued its mission to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the history and heritage of Haddam with collections care, online programs and traveling exhibits. We have carefully opened the museum back up and held a number of outside events including a summer concert series, walking tours, knitting bee and Founders’ Day Celebration. Although school programs were cancelled, we did present a $500 scholarship to a graduating HK senior in May.
In addition to the Thankful Arnold House Museum, the society is now responsible for the Haddam Shad Museum and its wonderful collection depicting the history of shad fishing along the Connecticut River. Staff continues to assist researchers, scholars and genealogists and provided information on the Haddam Orphanage, Venture Smith and shipbuilding to name just a few. A disappointing incident this year was the demolition of the Spencer Leverett House on Dublin Hill following approval by the Haddam Planning and Zoning Commission, however we did receive a grant to list the area on the State Register of Historic Places with the hopes that residents will understand the importance of their neighborhood and built environment.
We are actively planning events and programs for 2022, but much depends of health and safety protocols. We are proposing to upgrade our website to make it more user friendly and have dedicated space for online exhibits. Our goal is to continue to assist residents and visitors discover the fascinating history of our special community.
We are writing this letter today because we hope you will consider making an additional year end gift to the society and museum. So, as you review your end of the year giving, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Haddam Historic Society and best wishes for a happy holiday season.
Thankfully yours,
Terry Smith
