A Journey with Joseph Campbell and Thomas Brown
Thomas Brown lost his brother, Marc Brown, to suicide in 2001. After a decade of grief, uncertainty, and confusion, Thomas looked to make changes in his life. In 2012, along with a friend who had also lost a brother to suicide, Thomas set out on a 7,000-mile cross-country bicycle tour for suicide awareness and the healing power of art. The journey began on the northern edge of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and ended in Wappinger's Falls, New York, at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, the art retreat center of artists Alex and Allyson Grey.
Twelve years after the bike tour, Thomas has released his book, 2012: A Bicycle Odyssey. Using Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth of the Hero’s Journey, Thomas uses his experience to show the importance of seeing one's life through the lens of myth. Through his book, Thomas invites the reader to use stories from myth to contemporary literature, film, and music to understand oneself and one's place in the world.
Thomas will begin his class October 6th at 9 am in the Multipurpose Room. It will go through the Sundays of October. RSVP for the class by contacting Thomas Brown or Pastor Ken.
