Global Solidarity Prayer Vigil at Shadow Rock UCC

September 29, 2024

8:00 AM

Located on the North Patio

Shadow Rock has been asked to be part of a world wide prayer vigil which is intended to give support and raise awareness.

Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank are being denied their fundamental rights to live in the land which they have called home for generations. They are being dispossessed of their homes and their land. Every day new injustices are being committed, with the approval of the Israeli government, by Jewish settlers who deny any rights to the land but their own. Christian and Muslim Palestinians are being squeezed off the land, step by step, inch by inch. This offends all people of faith and goodwill who uphold a vision of justice and equity for all people. In Israel and Palestine Jews, Christians, Muslims, and secular people are united in protesting the treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank who are losing their land and their rights as illegal Jewish settlements and outposts are multiplying and spreading.

The Kisiya family in the West Bank and the Save Al-Makhrour movement invite all people of faith and conscience to join hands on September 29th for a day of prayerful solidarity and action.

Dozens more vigils are being organized and YOU are most welcome to join thousands of people around the world who will pray and show their support for Palestinian families. Right NOW is the time for us to say no more to displacement, land theft and erasure in the West Bank.

TOGETHER WE WILL PRAY AND SAY -

1. Give the land back now for the Kisiya’s and others displaced!

2. Stop funding the JNF (Jewish National Fund) which funds settler land theft and Palestinian displacement.

3. Raise your voice for Palestinians living under threat in Al-Makhrour and beyond. Protect the cradle of faith, the birth place of Jesus and the descendants of the first Christian communities.

Spiritual Play Kids Raise Money for NAMI (Speaking of Good Eats)

Our Spiritual Play kids are doing a service project by baking cookies and dog biscuits to sell at the potluck ($3.00 a bag or 2 bags for $5.00). This is their way to nurture their sense of belonging to our Shadow Rock spiritual family. They are glad to support our WISE Team and the WISE Team's participation in the NAMI Walk.

PS Pastor Ken tasted the dog biscuits and said they were delicious!

Will Highlight Interview With Jeanne Casteen

We have a tradition of interviewing interesting community leaders who share our values and vision. October 6th during the 10:15 AM worship time we will host Jeanne Casteen. She is the Executive Director of Secular AZ.

Secular AZ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization that protects the constitutional separation of church and state, and educates lawmakers and the public to ensure freedom of conscience for Arizonans of all faiths and of none.

Pastor Ken will interview Ms. Casteen and encourage her to share her spiritual journey and the work of Secular AZ.

JEANNE CASTEEN has a bachelor’s degree in human communication and history from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at ASU and a master’s in education, also from ASU. Jeanne has over 11 years of experience teaching in Maricopa County’s public schools. In 2011, Jeanne completed the Emerge Arizona program and in 2012 became a school board member of the Creighton School District. She served as Board President from 2016 through 2020. A Journey with Joseph Campbell and Thomas Brown

Thomas Brown lost his brother, Marc Brown, to suicide in 2001. After a decade of grief, uncertainty, and confusion, Thomas looked to make changes in his life. In 2012, along with a friend who had also lost a brother to suicide, Thomas set out on a 7,000-mile cross-country bicycle tour for suicide awareness and the healing power of art. The journey began on the northern edge of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and ended in Wappinger's Falls, New York, at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, the art retreat center of artists Alex and Allyson Grey.

Twelve years after the bike tour, Thomas has released his book, 2012: A Bicycle Odyssey. Using Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth of the Hero’s Journey, Thomas uses his experience to show the importance of seeing one's life through the lens of myth. Through his book, Thomas invites the reader to use stories from myth to contemporary literature, film, and music to understand oneself and one's place in the world.

Thomas will begin his class October 6th at 9 am in the Multipurpose Room. It will go through the Sundays of October. RSVP for the class by contacting Thomas Brown or Pastor Ken.
