Asylum Seekers Ordered To Be Deported to Countries They Don't Know, But End Up in Immigration Limbo | Associated Press
One Afghan man had fled the Taliban for refuge in upstate New York when immigration agents ordered his deportation to Uganda. A Cuban woman was working in Texas when she was arrested after a minor traffic accident and told she would be sent to Ecuador. They are among the more than 13,000 immigrants legally in the United States who were waiting for asylum case rulings when they suddenly faced third-country deportation orders to countries where they have no ties. Yet few have actually been deported. Because of unexplained changes in U.S. policy, many are now mired in immigration limbo, unable to argue their asylum claims in court and unsure if they will be shackled and put on a flight to a country they have never even seen.
This impacts most of the families we work with in our Immigration Justice Ministries. Our mission has been to keep people safe and families together. Part of this work was securing legal and administrative remedies for our families. Now, this is being taken away.
