Celebrate Cool Cash!

Rapper Jimmy Jr and the Soul Sistuhs, Susan Linda, Liz, and Cindy are thrilled to announce that Shadow Rock has currently raised $81,000 toward our Cool Cash Campaign. This will help Shadow Rock move forward!

Translation: Our fundraiser to repair and replace air conditioning units in the sanctuary building is off to a strong start. The initial anonymous gift of $30,000 has inspired members and friends of our congregation to add generous gifts totaling $81,000, with the hint that more may be on the way.

Thank you, everyone!

Today's Immigration News

Afghan Immigrants, Advocates Push Back Against Crackdown | The Guardian

Afghan immigrants and activists across the United States are firmly pushing back against the Trump administration's crackdown on legal immigration, especially against Afghans, saying the government is punishing hundreds of thousands of people for the alleged actions of one man. Since an Afghan asylee was charged in the case of the shooting of two National Guard members last month, the administration has taken actions that have generated fear, outrage, and defiance. "The attacker hasn't been put on trial, but the whole Afghan community has been labeled as guilty," said Yahya Haqiqi, president of the Afghan Support Network in the United States that has helped resettle thousands of Afghans in Oregon. These are people who "fought for American values in Afghanistan," Haqiqi said. "They are scared for their future, of not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow."

Commentary: Slave Raids Then, Immigration Raids Now | Catholic Review

Imagine it's December 1862 and you are in Philadelphia, a major Union hub and a prime port of refuge for free Blacks and "freedom seekers," the name slaves escaping bondage preferred to be called. Suddenly, a ruckus breaks out, and someone cries, "I am a free man! I have my papers!" But three white men, part of a slave patrol hired to return runaway slaves, don't believe him. He is shoved into a wagon and carried far away. Fast forward to 2025 in a Home Depot parking lot in Baltimore, Maryland. Vans arrive and come to an abrupt halt. Immigration agents jump out and surround Latino men repaving the parking lot. The workers are thrown to the ground and handcuffed. Screams that they have broken no law fall on deaf ears. "The more I see immigrants detained on television news, the more I feel transported back in time — revisiting the nightmare of freedom seekers and the diverse communities who risked their own liberty to save them," author Carole Norris Greene writes.

Archdiocese of Boston, ICE Director Call for Removal of Anti-ICE Nativity Scene | MassLive

The Archdiocese of Boston and the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have called for the removal of a Nativity scene at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, which criticizes immigration enforcement actions. The church's Nativity scene features a sign that reads "ICE was here" in place of Baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. A smaller sign reads "The Holy Family is safe in our Church." Terry Donilon, archdiocesan spokesperson, called for the removal of the display, saying it is "divisive political messaging."

Litigation Update

Supreme Court to Review Birthright Citizenship Executive Order

On Dec. 5, 2025, the Supreme Court granted certiorari in Trump v. Barbara, a case that originated in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire. The Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of the Trump Administration's Executive Order on birthright citizenship by deciding whether the order violates the Fourteenth Amendment's citizenship clause and the federal law that puts that clause into statute, 8 U.S.C. § 1401(a). Executive Order 14160 seeks to end automatic U.S. citizenship for children born in the United States to non-citizen or temporary-resident parents. Lower courts had previously blocked the order, ruling that it likely violated the Fourteenth Amendment. Oral arguments before the Supreme Court are expected in spring 2026, with a decision likely by June or July 2026.
