'ICE Was Here,' Says Church Nativity Sign Protesting Immigration Crackdown | Boston.com
The nativity scene at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, is missing the baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. "ICE was here," says a sign where the Holy Family should be. A smaller sign says, "The Holy Family is safe in the Sanctuary of our Church." Father Stephen Josoma, the church's pastor, said that it's a church tradition to use the Nativity scene to "hold the mirror up to what's happening, and this year, it seemed to be, my God, it seemed to be right there in front of us." Father Josoma shared that his parish helps resettle immigrants and migrants, that the immigration status of many parishioners could be in jeopardy, and that they could be killed if they are deported to their home countries. "It's a cruel policy, and we could do a lot better as a country dealing with the many issues that face us."
New ICE Operation in Minneapolis Is Said To Target Somali Immigrants | The New York Times
The Trump administration is reportedly now setting its sights on the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, launching an operation primarily targeting hundreds of undocumented Somali immigrants. The move comes as President Donald Trump has begun to fixate on Somalis living in the United States, using inflammatory language to speak about them. In a recent social media post, President Trump claimed that Somalis were "taking over" Minnesota. This rhetoric stems from last week's shooting of two National Guard troops, despite the fact that the suspect is an Afghan national. Immigration and Customs Enforcement received the operation order in Minnesota immediately after the president's remarks.
Immigration Crackdown Expected in New Orleans | CNN
Department of Homeland Security agents are expected to sweep into New Orleans this week — the latest Democratic-led city targeted by the federal immigration crackdown. Local officials say they are being kept in the dark, and this is sparking fears among immigrants. There is "mass chaos and confusion," said Councilmember at-Large Matthew Willard. "We're really fearful of the unknown, and looking at the coverage that we've seen in other cities by CNN, we certainly don't want that here in the city of New Orleans," he said.
Eight More Immigration Judges Fired in Nationwide Purge | Documented NY
On Monday, eight immigration judges working in New York City were fired, joining dozens of others across the country who were previously ousted without explicit cause since President Donald Trump took office. "We are troubled by the recent firings of professional jurists, [and] experienced judges with no reason given," said Jeremiah Johnson, vice president of the National Association of Immigration Judges (NAIJ). He called it "not only a purge, but a destruction" of the courts. According to the NAIJ, 98 immigration judges have been fired under the Trump administration. Among those targeted are judges with high rates of granting asylum.
