SHADOW ROCK RESPONDS TO LOOMING FOOD INSECURITY

We are hearing a great deal of the effects of the federal government shutdown, and creating food insecurity is one of the most faith critical of the effects. We are watching as the Arizona state government responds and courts hammer out their decisions.

Shadow Rock is responding by prioritizing food assistance when we use the Pastor's Charitable Fund.

We are also recommending donations to the Desert Mission Food Bank located on the other side of the mountain in Sunnyslope. Below is a link and a list of preferred needed items.

HonorHealth Desert Mission Food Bank

Food items of greatest need

Desert Mission accepts most non-perishable food donations if the product is unopened, labeled and in its original packaging.

We encourage you to donate heart-healthy foods that are low in sodium and fat, though have the greatest need for the following:

  • Pasta
  • Cereal
  • Canned veggies (low sodium encouraged)
  • Juice (100% juice encouraged)
  • Chicken and tuna in water
  • Canned beans
  • Dry beans
  • Peanut butter
  • Bottled water

Other items of greatest need:

  • Paper products, such as toilet paper and paper towels
  • Hygiene products
  • Baby formula (orange or blue Similac for ages 12 months and younger)

Donation drop-offs

Donations can be dropped off at Desert Mission Food Bank during our hours of operation (see hours and directions).

Please pull into the loading area to the left of the food bank entrance. Ring the doorbell, and our friendly staff or volunteers will assist you.

Another consideration for our response in the near future is a special offering in December. More on this later.

Please note: The food bank is most empowered with financial donations because they can leverage more than we can because of the contacts and networking.

This is one of the ways we advocate for inclusion, equity, and justice for all immigrants living in the United States, regardless of their immigration status. Our hearts have been touched by the friendships we have made through our work for undocumented people. We are truly blessed and promise to continue working towards positive change.

At this point, we are NOT offering the following ministries:

  • Sanctuary
  • Asylum Hospitality
  • Refugee Resettlement

Our next support meeting and legal clinic is scheduled for December 7th at 1:00 PM in the Multipurpose Room. We are also providing a Zoom link for people who feel safer attending by Zoom. All are invited. Please contact Pastor Ken about our important and quiet work.

Today's Immigration News

School Disruption, Empty Desks in ICE-Targeted Neighborhoods | The Washington Post

The effects of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week tore through schools, disrupting learning as more than 20 percent of students stayed home. At many schools, children were missing or rattled. "I'm a U.S. citizen," read a tag worn by one student. "You can't get ready for this type of disruption," said Amanda Thompson, president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg teachers union. "All of our students are being affected." Charlotte is one example of how the sweeping campaign to detain and deport undocumented immigrants — including through operations near schools — has traumatized children, put new burdens on administrators and teachers, and dramatically altered the school year in many U.S. communities.

Pastor Ken stumbled onto this video that explains the government’s tactics and intent with policy that affects Lily Avila.
