Today's Immigration News
Video: How Immigration Policies Affect Caregiving and Nursing Homes | PBS News Hour
More than 1 million immigrants work in the U.S. healthcare system, and they comprise an increasing share of caregivers for the elderly and disabled. But the Trump administration's immigration policies — such as ending Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians — are not creating a crisis only for immigrants. They are also putting a strain on long-term healthcare facilities where noncitizens represent over 7 percent of the workforce. "There are already huge numbers of vacancies for nursing home workers and for home care workers. And if the immigrants who are now filling these jobs go away, [the jobs remaining unfilled] is almost certainly what's going to happen," said David Himmelstein, public health professor at Hunter College.
Private Companies Aiding Immigration Crackdown See Massive Financial Gains | The Guardian
The tech, surveillance, and private prison firms arming the Trump administration's massive expansion of immigration enforcement are running a victory lap after their latest financial reports. Palantir — a tech firm — and Geo Group and CoreCivic — the private prison and surveillance companies — reported that they brought in more money than Wall Street expected in the second quarter of 2025. Palantir is now building a database that promises to make detention and deportation "more efficient," and Geo Group is establishing detention centers on military bases. Advocates are concerned about these developments and the increased funding that contractors are receiving. "As we know, budgets are moral documents, and last month Congress decided to fully fund cruelty aimed at immigrant communities at the expense of vital programs that serve all Americans," said Setareh Ghandehari, advocacy director at the Detention Watch Network.
