Association Updates

Dear MAA Members,

The Maryland Arborist Association enjoyed a beautiful day in Federal Hill Park in Baltimore for their 40 th Annual Arborist Day Event! Over forty volunteers joined in to provide $52,400 worth of tree work for the park. Keep an eye out for details on next year’s event which will be held at Adkins Arboretum on the Eastern Shore. Local members please let us know if you are interested in assisting with the planning process.

Next month, MAA will hold their 2018 Election of Officers and Directors. The elections will establish the board of directors for the time period July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2018. As we did in the last election held in the spring of 2016, we will distribute an electronic ballot. Please check your email for more details in the coming weeks.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our fall safety event, which will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship. This event is a great opportunity to earn any CEUs you may need before the year ends.

Stay Safe!

Urban Forest Management Toolkit
CalFire and the U.S. Forest Service teamed up to create a free, online toolkit to help tree care professionals use proactive management to provide for maximum, long-term benefits and save money. The TOOLKIT is a guide that helps communities develop plans that are science-based and proactive. Through the website, users first develop a work plan, then the website helps guide through the process of urban forest management planning and adaptive management. Users are also able to draw ideas from other examples of both small and large areas given throughout the website and from other plans.

CDC Warns of Tick-Borne Diseases
Tick populations across the U.S have skyrocketing in recent years, and the number of tick-borne diseases have too. "It's a big epidemic affecting the entire East Coast," said Alfaro Toledo, an assistant professor in the department of entomology at Rutgers University. While deer ticks are most likely to be the ones transmitting Lyme and lone star ticks, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, dog ticks and a new invader, the Longhorned tick, can also carry and transmit disease.
