Shake... Shake... Shake...
Delicious chocolate milkshake.
Did you know today is Chocolate Milkshake Day? It's true! Yay! Let's all have one, shall we?
So here is some interesting trivia about milkshakes. The word 'milkshake' was first used in 1885 and it was actually an alcoholic beverage! It contained whiskey and eggs; sort of like a 'nog'.
But why the word 'milkshake'? Well the drink looked like milk and the rumor is, if the patron enjoyed the drink, he would shake the hand of the bartender. If he did not, then the bartender received no tip. Wonder if that's a good idea for other industries? Ha!
The milkshake as we know it today, a thick, gooey, frozen confection was developed in 1922 by Ivan Coulson, a Walgreen's employee. He wanted to perk up the soda fountain so he added Walgreen's own vanilla ice cream to their previous concoction of milk, chocolate syrup and malt. Ta Da! The milkshake we love to this very day.
It hasn't changed much in the last 95 years! However, there are all sorts of flavor variations on this sweet drink. Here in the Palm Springs area, we have a shop called Great Shakes where all they do is milkshakes. No cones, no cups, nothing other than shakes and malts!
3 delicious milk shake flavors.
Located at 160 S. Palm Canyon Drive, there is almost always a line to get one of their delectable and arguably the best-in-the-desert, milkshakes or malts. I don't know the owners and haven't even been there yet, but their reputation precedes them.
By the way, all the reviews are hyper positive for Great Shakes and there is now a location in Riverside too. For more information, check out their website at www.greatshakes.com
What's really interesting is that the simple invention of adding ice cream to what otherwise was a sweet but pretty boring soda fountain drink spawned the invention of several other industries.
Hamilton Beach invented the drink mixer -- those machines with a spindle that you put into a metal cup -- in 1922. This type of drink mixer actually infuses the drink with air while it's mixing to give it a frothy voluminous texture.
Once Freon cooled refrigerators came on the scene in the 1930's, inventor Earl Prince used that same concept to create the five spindle mixer that could produce five milkshakes at once, then drop them into waiting paper cups.
These types of ice cream machines are used to this day in many fast food establishments and frozen yogurt shops in one variation or another. Most people have foregone the spindle drink mixer for Bullets or Ninjas (you know what I mean!) but if you really want an old fashioned spindle, Cuisinart makes one for $200. By the way, in the mid-80's a Hamilton Beach was under $50! Ahhh nostalgia!
Colorful drinking straws.
And despite the healthy, clean eating craze we've all seem to have adopted, milkshake consumption was on the rise all throughout the early 2000's. Did you know that milkshakes account for 40% of all beverages sold? That's according to Nation's Restaurant News July 2016.
Now I know you're wondering where I am going with all this, right? Well the point is that one thing leads to another. Even though some jobs and industries disappear with the advent of new technology or new products, others emerge.
As an example, take telephones. In the really old days (before me, ahem), one had to ring an operator and ask to be connected. I am old enough to remember party lines too although I don't recall exactly how they worked (because I was too young!).
Manual switchboard operators lasted until about the 1960's then we became auto-connected and the job of switchboard operators were passé' except for 411 information. Now even that is gone. The advent of cellphones has turned the communications industry upside down!
Colorful cell phone covers.
But cell phones have spawned several new products including covers, headphones, wall and car chargers, extra battery backups, multi-HDMI systems, Siri, all kinds of apps... the list goes on and on.
All of these products require designers and engineers and manufacturing personnel, planners and customer service reps, web designers, and programmers, sales people, repair people, packaging and postage and here too, the list of jobs goes on and on.
What I am trying to say, in a non-efficient way, is that the world is ever evolving. Products and jobs and society are ever evolving. Just because a product or job disappears, it seems there is always a new one cropping up to take its place.
This gives me a feeling of Hope. That's what that is. In the wake of hurricanes and earthquakes and fires and floods there is always Hope. Hope for a better future. Hope for our children and grandchildren. Hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
You know what? I'm serious -- go get yourself a milkshake today!

Roll...
So school just started and the traffic is increasing and the holidays are right around the corner. Typically this means we all roll with whatever comes our way.

Holiday lights on a house.
If you're a snowbird, please let us know how we may help ready your home for season. Cleaning, patio furniture, seasonal flowers -- if you think you might want holiday lights this year, please ask asap.

We also assist with taking delivery of cars being transported back to town, as well as preventative maintenance of golf carts, pool heaters and HVAC systems.

We can stock the home with food, wash your bed linens and remake the bed so it is fresh; in fact we can satisfy just about any task on your 'to do' list.

If you live here full time, we can do any of those tasks for you as well, plus assist with shopping for Christmas or Hanukkah, gift wrapping, shipping packages, party planning, readying the home for holiday gatherings, and keeping a watchful eye on your home if you plan to be gone for the holidays.

Lift Up Quote Graphics.
Even the smallest effort can give Hope to someone in need. Some time ago, I gave a class on resume' writing to a group of women at the Rescue Mission. They were so appreciative and attentive! It was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

This desert is full of charitable organizations so it isn't very hard to find a place to donate your time. And it doesn't even have to be a lot of time. FIND Foodbank can always use a hand for an afternoon. Anything we can do to reduce (or better, end) food insecurities is nothing to shake a stick at.

It takes so little to give Hope to someone in need. Any random act of kindness sets off a chain reaction of light and positive energy.  A smile, a kind word, a gentle touch can brighten someone's day and make a difference in their life.

As we start the last quarter of 2017, consider slowing down a little and find a way to share your gratitude for all you have by giving someone else some Hope. I promise, you'll feel great for it!

Until next time, let's Shake, Rattle and Roll our way into the holiday season.... We can't wait!
