The TECHE Project is proud to announce the 5th annual Shake Your Trail Feather Festival. This event raises funds to create projects and maintain facilities along the Bayou Teche National Paddle Trail. Shake Your Trail Feather will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 22.

The cost is free; however, the TECHE Project is raising funds for the Paddle Trail by selling an official festival pin for $5. Food, beverages and merchandise will also be available. Performances include
  • The St. Bernard School French Musicians (11:30 a.m. - 12:30, Heritage Tent)
  • Sabra and the Get Rights (noon - 1:30 p.m.)
  • Sweet Cecilia (2 - 3:30 p.m.)
  • The Pine Leaf Boys with special guest Roddie Romero (4 - 6 p.m.).
The festival's theme this year is the "Ecology of the Bayou Teche Watershed" and on the Heritage Stage, Naturalists and Wildlife Biologists Bill Fontenot and Glenn Thomas will be sharing their insights about the flora and fauna of Bayou Teche.

There will be artisans selling their wares, and the TECHE Project members and partner organizations (Wildlife Organizations, Trees Acadiana, Lafayette Paddle Club and Tour du Teche) will be onsite to provide educational information and demonstrations about the various projects taking place on the bayou. There will be face painting and several games and activities for kids. Come adorned as birds and compete for the Best "Bayou Bird" Prizes.

David Greely with Sabra and the Get Rights has played at this festival several times and describes the festival as "a great time in a beautiful setting that has something for the whole family to enjoy. Besides being fun to attend, the Trail Feather Festival gives you a sense of well-being knowing that your presence supports the good work that is taking place on the bayou. I have lived near Bayou Teche for over 25 years, and seeing what the TECHE Project is doing to bring a positive focus to the bayou is uplifting."

Paddle Trips

Pack and Paddle is providing a kayak for raffle. For a $3 ticket you can try your luck at winning a 12-foot Native Watercraft, Manta Ray kayak. Cajun Paddle will be partnering by hosting a "Paddle to the Party" float trip. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats will paddle from Poche Bridge to the park with a floating band escort. In addition, The TECHE Project is partnering with TRAIL to host the "Trail Feathers" bike event with three routes. There is also a combined cycle and paddle to the party option that is very popular with recreationalists. For more information about these activities, contact BayouTecheExperience.com (paddle) and [email protected] (bike and bike/paddle).

Breaux Bridge's Involvement:
The City of Breaux Bridge has partnered with the TECHE Project to make this event possible.

"We are excited to see Bayou Teche being recognized for its beauty and culture as Louisiana's first National Water Trail," said Mayor Ricky Calais. "The TECHE Project is working hard, as evidenced by the beautiful new trailhead in Parc du Pont.  The Bayou Teche Paddle Trail is a great way to draw people to our City, and we are proud to be working with the TECHE Project to build a first-class paddle trail!"

About TECHE Project:
The TECHE Project is a non-profit group working to create a Bayou Teche Renaissance by enhancing the quality of life for communities and recreationalists on the bayou. This volunteer group has removed 54 tons of trash from the bayou and manages the Bayou Teche Paddle Trail, the  first National Water Trail in Louisiana. They are building floating docks and trailheads in several trail towns along the bayou, including the newly constructed trailhead in Breaux Bridge.
