Snowy Hike at Shaker Nature Center
Robyn Feinstein’s class of first-graders ventured out of Mercer for a snowy hike at the Shaker Nature Center! They had a great time learning about local habitats and wildlife. Students identified animal tracks in the snow and learned about how animals survive in the harsh winter season. The kids enjoyed this opportunity to spend time in nature!

Shaker Students Win Scholastic Art Awards
Congratulations to the Shaker Heights students who earned awards this year at the regional Scholastic Art Exhibition. A total of 20 awards were presented, which included 4 Gold Keys, 5 Silver Keys, and 11 honorable mentions.
Students submitted their work to the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Iowa. The students’ artwork was evaluated and acknowledged by a panel of creative professionals, receiving awards for its exceptional originality, skill, and the development of a unique personal voice and vision.
Since 1923, the Awards have celebrated some of the nation’s most distinguished artists and writers during their teenage years, including Stephen King, Amanda Gorman, and Andy Warhol. We are proud to include Shaker students among these prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards alumni! Students who received a Gold Key will proceed to the National level for further judging, with National Medalists set to be announced on March 26.

SHHS Students, Staff Celebrate Chinese New Year
Students, families, and staff gathered at Shaker Heights High School to celebrate the Chinese New Year! This day-long celebration supported by the Shaker Schools Foundation included dumpling-making, student performances, traditional Chinese crafts, a dragon-awakening ceremony and dance and a livestream countdown to the New Year! This event brought together students from Chinese 1-6 classes, IB World History, and Asian Studies, in addition to the Asian Culture Club. What a great way to kick off the Year of the Snake!

By William Warren, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools
As the calendar flips to February this week, two important history & heritage months will be acknowledged and celebrated. First is the Lunar New Year, which began a two-week celebration this past Wednesday, January 29. More commonly known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, nearly 1 billion people celebrate the arrival of spring in many Southeast Asian countries like China, Korea and Vietnam. According to the Chinese New Year lunar calendar, the first new moon of 2025 begins the Year of the Snake, a time to shed bad traits and habits much like a snake sheds its old skin. Food, festivals and fireworks are the traditional way for all to come together and celebrate new beginnings and the hope of a prosperous new year.
Starting February 1, the culture, history and heritage of Black/African-Americans will be celebrated during Black History Month (BHM). The first ever volume of From the Margins to the Center, penned by Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Dr. Larry Burnley, detailed the history of the creation of BHM, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. I encourage you to read his feature as a way to kick off BHM, and be on the lookout for more content from FMC that will feature Black student, faculty, staff and community voices during February.
