Students Engage in Community Conversation

Many community members turned out for the Community Conversation in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day last week. The Shaker Heights Schools partnered with the City of Shaker Heights, the Shaker Heights Public Library and the Shaker Schools Foundation to host a conversation about Dr. King’s mission to achieve a beloved community. The conversation took place at St. Dominic School and the meal was catered by Zanzibar Soul Fusion. Many Shaker students joined the conversation, including members of the Student Group on Race Relations (SGORR).

Students at Mercer Elementary School practice yoga stretches.

Students Learn Mindfulness with Yoga Practice

Second and third-grade students are learning all about yoga! With the support of the Shaker Schools Foundation, Mercer Elementary School teachers Georgia DeGree and Sandra Skandul welcomed a yoga teacher into their classes. The students learned breathing exercises with a Hoberman sphere, also known as a breathing ball, that expands and contracts. This technique helps students stay calm and focused. They also practiced stretches to feel rejuvenated. By the end of the session, students were ready to take on the day!

From the Margins to the Center, Vol. XXXV — International Holocaust Remembrance Day

By William Warren, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools

International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be observed this Monday, January 27. In 2005, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed Resolution 60/7 to establish January 27 as an international day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to condemn any attempts of Holocaust denial. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Red Army on January 27, 1945. The UN resolution also directed member nations to invest in educating future generations about the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust, and ways to combat antisemitism. Yearly commemoration events are held in dozens of countries, with some hosting film viewings and speeches and others lighting candles and reading the names of Holocaust victims.
