From Family and Community Engagement: SAMS Presents Leading from Behind

SAMS celebrates Black History Month by showcasing women in history who have helped to open doors for so many but whose names have been left behind. Join SAMS, in partnership with Black History Promotes Literacy, at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5 at the Van Aken District Market Hall for an art opening installation that will be on display through February 28.

The opening will showcase portraits of women in history designed by high school art students. Come enjoy spoken word and poetry as each art piece is presented. The installment includes wood panels that have been fashioned to look like doors, representing the doors that African American women in history opened as they made a significant impact in their fields or line of work.

Shaker Heights High School Completes Upgrades to Physical Education and Athletics Spaces

The Raider Athletic Center and a new wrestling room at Shaker Heights High School have opened, thanks to the generosity of the Shaker Schools Foundation and its partnership with the Shaker Heights High School Athletic and Physical Education Departments. The Foundation raised funds for this project with generous support from the Shaker Sports Boosters, the David M. Berger Fund, District parents, alumni and community members.

The Raider Athletic Center and the new wrestling room round out the High School’s recently updated physical education spaces, which also includes a new cardio room. These newly renovated spaces will help to expand Shaker’s Physical Education program, and will provide more students access to physical fitness equipment and opportunities for athletic conditioning. Read more.

Apply for Free/Reduced-Price Lunch

The District encourages all families to submit an application for free- or reduced-price meal eligibility regardless of family income. The percentage of students qualifying for meals is a data point utilized by the federal government to provide the District with certain funds that benefit all students. There is no application deadline; families may apply at any time. One application must be completed for each household each school year. Families can learn more about Free/Reduced-Price lunch and apply online.
