State Testing Update
State achievement tests inform families and teachers of how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. Every student in Grades 3-8 is assessed in English language arts and mathematics, using the assessment that corresponds to their learning standards. Students in Grades 5 and 8 are assessed in science.
End-of-course assessments (EOCs) are the state achievement tests that are administered to high school students upon completion of specific courses. This includes an Algebra EOC that some Shaker students take in middle school. To earn a high school diploma in Ohio, students must demonstrate competency on the Algebra and English language arts EOCs. EOCs in other subjects offer students the opportunity to earn graduation seals, another requirement to earn a high school diploma in Ohio.
State testing will begin after Spring Break. Each building will be in contact with families to share specific test dates. Additional information about the tests can be found here.
Information about all of the assessments and our District assessment calendar can be found on the testing page of shaker.org.

From the Margins to the Center, Vol. XLIII — Celebrating National Irish American Heritage Month
By William Warren, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools
NOTE: The month of March acknowledges several communities and their contributions to history. During March, From the Margins to the Center will feature information and stories in observance of Women’s History Month, National Irish American Month and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This week’s feature is in observance of National Irish American Heritage Month.
The month of March has been proclaimed as National Irish American Heritage Month since 1991, in recognition of the achievements and contributions of Irish Americans. Between 1820 and 1920, 4.5 million people immigrated to the United States from Ireland to escape oppressive British rule in their homeland, and due to the Great Potato Famine of 1845. Irish-American populations in Boston, New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia established communities ripe with Irish heritage displayed in restaurants, pubs and grocery stores. Irish immigrants also found their way to Cleveland, settling along the banks of the Cuyahoga River and contributing to the building of the Ohio & Erie Canal.
It is also important during this month of observance and celebration to acknowledge the realities of the history of Irish-Americans and the discrimination suffered due to their Catholic religious beliefs clashing with Protestant communities. Irish stereotypes depicting them as violent, alcoholic brutes were commonly displayed in newspapers and magazines, with many still in existence today. Millions of Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day each year on March 17, yet it’s important to remember that Irish culture and traditions are more than shamrocks, bagpipes and leprechauns. They are a resilient and determined community, proud of their homeland and pivotal to the development of America.
