SHHS Students Go On Fishing Trip
Ms. Morton’s Lifetime Fitness & Yoga classes recently took a short walk across the street to the duck pond for a fishing field trip. For some students, it was their very first time catching a fish! They learned how to bait hooks, remove fish, and gained lifelong skills like patience, problem-solving, self-sufficiency and mindfulness.
The Shaker Heights High School students mostly caught green panfish and a few carp, all while enjoying a break from the hustle and bustle of school. It was a fun and peaceful day outdoors — and now they’re ready to fish for life!

Update from #FinanceFriday
Have you seen the #FinanceFriday posts on the Shaker Heights Schools Facebook and Instagram pages? If not, check them out on Fridays. We will share the same information in the Sunday eNews.
We’re back for another week of #FinanceFriday! In our last installment, we learned about District expenditures on salaries and wages. This week, we will look closely at District benefits.
Benefits make up 22% of the District’s general fund expenditures. This includes retirement, workers compensation, Medicaid, and insurance, including medical, dental, vision, long-term care, and life insurance.
Benefits have increased historically at a rate of 5%, and they are projected to increase at a rate of approximately 10% through Fiscal Year 2029. The District has seen significant growth in healthcare related expenses in the last four years.
Stay tuned for another installment of #FinanceFriday!

Upcoming Panorama Student Survey
After Memorial Day, all Shaker students in Grades 3 through 12 will be taking the Panorama Student Survey again. Panorama provides a computer-based survey composed of multiple choice and open-ended (free response) questions. The Panorama Student Survey gathers feedback from students about their classroom learning experience and their perceptions of the overall school environment. The survey takes about 20-30 minutes, and the responses to the surveys will be completely confidential.
If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, you have the option to opt-out by completing the Testing form in the PowerSchool Portal by May 26. Please log into PowerSchool and click Forms from the list on the left. The title of the form is “Testing: complete this form only if your child will NOT participate.” Complete the section in the form for the Panorama Student Survey. At this time, you do not need to complete the other parts of the form.

By William Warren, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools
Note: The month of May acknowledges several communities and their contributions to history. During May, From the Margins to the Center will feature information and stories in observance of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. This week’s feature is in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month.
Since 2006, Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) has been proclaimed as a time to commemorate the impact of Jewish Americans on American society. Nearly 80,000 Jewish Americans call Greater Cleveland home, with a vast number of Jews across the diaspora choosing to live, work and worship across the city. Shaker Heights is home to many prominent Jewish Americans who, over the years, have made significant contributions to Northeast Ohio, the nation and the world. Another important aspect of JAHM is to educate and inform communities of the realities of Jewish Americans, utilizing these tools to fight against antisemitism. Not to be forgotten amongst such a diverse ethnoreligious population, Jewish Americans of color also fight against racial inequities and disparities to ensure multiethnic Jewish representation within their community. We invite everyone to take this time out during JAHM to support the effort of elevating the acknowledgement of Jewish Americans in our national and local society.
