Immersive Classroom Experience on Detracking

Community members attended the Superintendent’s Series on Detracking earlier this week to learn about the District’s detracking efforts. After a brief presentation on detracking data from Dr. John Moore, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, attendees participated in an immersive classroom experience on detracking. Community members could select a class of their choice, including AP African American Studies, Algebra I, IB Theory of Knowledge or 4th Grade Language and Literature. Attendees learned about how teachers can adjust the curriculum in one class for students of all ability levels and push students to reach their highest potential.

All Are Welcome for International Potluck Dinner

You are welcome to join the International Families & Friends (IFF) for an evening of fellowship at our annual Potluck Dinner, to be held at Shaker Heights Middle School (20600 Shaker Blvd.) in the cafeteria on Thursday, November 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. You do not need to be an “International Family” to attend this event; it is for all families of all grade levels. Bring your friends, or come to make new friends! Please bring a dish of food to share. We kindly ask that you bring no beef, pork, nuts, or nut oils in your dishes. Here is our event flyer. Please complete our RSVP form so we know how many people to expect.

Important Update: New Emergency Notification System for Shaker Heights Schools

Beginning today, families and staff will now receive emergency notifications and District-level messages through Finalsite’s Mass Notifications platform. Moving forward, all District-level and emergency text messages will come from 60680. Please save this number in your contacts to avoid missing important updates! There is no further action required from families because the District already has your contact information.

Please Note: The District’s contract with SchoolMessenger for District-level and emergency communications expired, which led to the switch to Mass Notifications. Classroom communications via ParentSquare will remain the same and are not affected by this change.

From the Margins to the Center, Vol. XXVII — The History of Indigenous Peoples' Fight for Voting Rights

By William Warren, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools

In the spirit of this past week’s nationwide election to decide the next President of the United States, this week’s feature brings the history of suffrage for Native Indigenous persons to the center, a movement that continues to evolve and grow. The Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, passed in 1868, gave citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States. This amendment did not initially apply to Native Tribal members, as they were considered members of independent tribal nations who did not pay real estate taxes. In 1924, all Indigenous peoples were granted citizenship under the Indian Citizenship Act, which included the right to vote in federal elections. However, states that recognized Native Tribal nations, such as Arizona, New Mexico, Montana and Utah attempted to suppress their voting rights. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 paved the way for federal protections of voting rights, initially aimed towards African Americans in the South, but also aided Native American suffrage. Since the 1990s, there has been an increase in Indigenous voter participation in these aforementioned states. This led to Deb Haaland of New Mexico becoming the first Indigenous person elected to Congress. In 2021, Haaland was confirmed as the Secretary of the Interior under President Joe Biden.
