The Personal Project is the culmination of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP). This project is a product, event or experience that captures and reflects the learning and development that the student has experienced over the course of their education. Raider Roast Cafe Serves Up Coffee, Pastries
Shaker Heights High School students transform their ES classroom into Roberts Raider Roast Cafe several times a week, where Shaker staff can pick up specialty drinks and pastries! The students offer several types of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, in addition to light snacks like muffins and donuts. The cafe was started in 2018 by Kim Roberts, who now serves as the Transition Coordinator for the High School.
Intervention Specialist Susie Mazzone, who oversees the cafe, says students are developing life skills, including work skills and social skills. In a supportive environment with teachers, students can develop these skills and prepare for life after graduation. Later this fall, the classroom will reopen as Cafe 132, and the students will prepare lunch orders. Keep an eye out for chili and other hearty dishes coming soon!

By William Warren, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Coordinator, Shaker Heights Schools
During the month of November, Native American Heritage Month is observed as a time to recognize and celebrate the culture, traditions and contributions of America’s Indigenous Tribal Nations. Historical texts have referred to these tribes collectively as Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and American Indians; however, many native communities prefer to be addressed by their Tribal Names. Known for their diverse languages, spiritual traditions and domesticating several plants and animals still prevalent in our society today, America’s Indigenous Peoples thrived for thousands of years before European exploration and colonization, yet they were referred to as “savages” and “uncivilized.” Today, Native Tribes continue to advocate for the preservation of their communities beyond the reservations many were forced to relocate to, whether it be via collective protest against offensive Native American imagery in sports, to organized opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline. We affirm the resilience and determination of Indigenous peoples native to America and during the month of November, we look forward to bringing more of their history and heritage “from the margins to the center.”
