Visual Note Taker Visits Students at Innovative Center

Jo Byrne, a professional visual note taker, visited students at the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning (IC) this week! As a visual note taker, Ms. Byrne captures conversations, keynotes and messaging visually to help people process and remember what they are learning. She takes visual notes for clients in real time on site and virtually.

Ms. Byrne met with students at the IC to introduce them to this career, and they practiced a few prompts so students could show off their skills!

Update from #FinanceFriday

At the last Board of Education meeting on October 9, board members reviewed the five-year forecast. Let’s take a look at a few highlights from the forecast.

In Fiscal Year 2026, the District is projecting $109.7 million in revenues and $122.2 million in expenditures, resulting in an anticipated $12.5 million budget shortfall.

The forecast does include potential funding from the November levy, which if approved, would generate approximately $12.5 million in Calendar Year 2026. Because the District’s fiscal year ends in June, the forecast reflects half-year collections ($6.2 million) for FY26, since levy revenues are received on a calendar-year basis rather than a fiscal-year basis.

Earlier this calendar year, our Finance and Audit Committee recommended reducing spending by $1 million each year for the next five years, totaling a reduction of $15 million in expenditures. For Fiscal Year 2026, the District has already identified approximately $2.5 million in cost-saving opportunities, and we are committed to continuing this work by finding additional reductions each year.

Stay tuned for the next installment of #FinanceFriday, where we will dig deeper into the five-year forecast!

Government Students Attend Campaign Information Fair

Students in Government classes recently attended a Campaign Information Fair at Shaker Heights High School! As students learn about how government works, they also have the opportunity to participate in a campaign and learn about community advocacy.

Students spoke with local candidates and Congresswoman Shontel Brown! Students also signed up for canvassing and other nonpartisan community advocacy efforts through the League of Women Voters.

We are so proud of our students for learning to advocate for a cause that they believe in, one of the values of an International Baccalaureate (IB) education!

Support the SHHS Planetarium

For more than 50 years, the Shaker Heights High School Planetarium has been a gateway to the universe, sparking curiosity, wonder, and a lifelong love of science. Each year, more than 10,000 Shaker students, from PreK through Grade 12, experience hands-on, immersive STEM learning without ever leaving campus.

The Shaker Schools Foundation continues to expand these opportunities. Next up: a major upgrade to the state-of-the-art SkyExplorer projector from Konica Minolta, bringing breathtaking visuals, a wide field of view, and interactive navigation for an even more dynamic journey through the stars.

Hear from one of our beloved former SHHS Planetarium teachers Mr. Gene Zajak, who shares why having our very own planetarium makes Shaker truly out of this world!

Your support helps keep this tradition of exploration shining bright. Every gift, from $100 to $5,000, helps our students reach for the stars. Donate Today!
