High School Joins Students Demand Action Walk Out

On Friday, Shaker Heights High School students demonstrated civic engagement by participating in a nationwide Students Demand Action walkout focused on ending gun violence.

At noon, students led a march around the Oval, carrying signs to share their message. The event concluded with an open mic on the front lawn, providing students a platform to voice their thoughts and concerns.

This student-led effort reflects the commitment of Shaker students to engage thoughtfully with issues that matter and to practice active citizenship.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

As we start Attendance Awareness Month, we encourage students to Show Up and Shine in Shaker to support learning and make it easier to connect with friends and teachers. Our attendance goal for each student is to be absent 5% or less in the 2025-2026 school year.

In Shaker Heights Schools, we are aiming for 8 days or less, but exemplary is best! The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce defines this as “satisfactory” attendance.

We invite students and families to use the attendance tracker magnets that were sent home for K-12 students to record and monitor attendance. Contact your school office if you need a magnet.

Food Science Classes Thrive with Equipment Donations

Mr. Bishko’s Grade 8 Food Science class is off to a flavorful start this year! Thanks to generous equipment donations over the summer — including immersion blenders, a refrigerator, new cookware sets, and even an espresso machine — students are diving hands-on into food chemistry and culinary creativity.

Check out our young chefs in action as they experiment with fermented garlic using vacuum sealers! These experiences wouldn’t be possible without community support. A special shoutout to the Shaker Schools Foundation for funding new induction cooktops, and to Boom's Pizza at the Van Aken District for partnering with us this September!

When you dine at Boom’s Pizza this month, you can Round Up and Give — with proceeds benefiting the Shaker Schools Foundation and earmarked for Mr. Bishko’s Food Science classes. Every slice supports hands-on, real-world learning for Shaker students! Stop by Boom’s Pizza all September long and round up your purchase to support our student scientists!
