Hamlet is the greatest and most influential piece of literature written in the English language. The poetry, drama, comedy, and genius of the work is exemplified in the title character and to put it up on the stage is something every director relishes to do but so few are privileged. And with that privilege comes the responsibility of giving to the audience something new and exciting with a script that is hovering at around 415 years old. To do this, I decided to focus on two of the most prominent themes central to the story: the Church and the State. Or, to speak modernly: the spiritual and the political.
We hope to present to you a bold, re-invigorated Hamlet, free of the traditional approaches, fastened into something new and original. It will not please everyone. That is part of the charm and ubiquity of Shakespeare: he is always malleable to a new concept. May ours provide, if not complete understanding of Hamlet the character, a more charitable understanding of Hamlet the play. Thank you.
Nicholas Zebrun
