Shane Lee Wins Hickory Limited Late Model Main; Finishes Fifth in NASCAR Late Model Stock Feature
(Hickory, N.C.) -Shane Lee won his second feature of the 2013 season at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night, passing Landon Huffman with five laps to go in the 35-lap Limited Late Model feature to score top honors.
Shane then went on to finish fifth in the NASCAR All-American Late Model 100-lap main event, capping a highly successful night for the defending Limited division champion.
"Landon gave us a real fight there right down to the end," Shane said after the Limited race. "He was getting through the center much better than we were early. Our car got better toward the end. I saw the opportunity and I figured I had to make it stick. We raced hard and got past him with a few laps left. That was a close one! Landon's a good racer. That was a close one!"
Shane and the team turned their attention to the NASCAR Late Model. The third 100-lap feature of the year beckoned. Shane qualified 11th and he knew he was going to have to make some passes early in the race to get into a comfortable position running with the leaders.
In the first 40-laps of the race, Shane made some spectacular moves through traffic using both the inside and outside groove as he winged his way to fourth.
Unfortunately, the last half the race wasn't quite so kind to the 19-year-old racer. "I think we burned the right front tire up trying to get through the field," he said after the race. "We got to fourth and those guys were racing hard. Matt Piercy and I went back and fourth a little bit there but then we cleared him and managed a fifth place finish. Who would have thought that a 15.28 in qualifying would have only been 11th fastest? That put us in a bit of a hole right there but we ended up with our second top five in three races so that's a good way to start the season!"
