Dear Community Member,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2021 Housing Action Plan public outreach process, and to everyone who has continued to be involved as the City works on making code changes that enact the strategies listed in the Housing Action Plan. Some of those strategies include the Shaping Spokane Housing code changes for ADUs, Short Plats, and Lot Size Transition approved by Spokane City Council.

Spokane is a city of choice for residents, and is attractive to future residents thanks to our beautiful location, robust public park system, unique neighborhoods, and vibrant downtown. Growing from the work completed through the Housing Action Plan and Shaping Spokane Housing, the City is taking immediate steps to increase housing in Spokane. Additionally, Mayor Woodward and Spokane City Council members are working together for the Building Opportunity and Choices for All interim zoning ordinance encouraging missing middle housing development over the next year.

Planning staff are busy presenting the Building Opportunity and Choices for All zoning pilot program: 

• Public Infrastructure and Environmental Sustainability Committee - June 27
• Community Assembly on Thursday, July 7
• First reading of proposed ordinance to Council - July 11
• Plan Commission workshop - July 13

Spokane City Council unanimously approved to adopt code amendments to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), Lot Size Transitions, and Short Plat Notification and Fees last month. These amendments support the work of the Spokane Housing Action Plan.

Coming Up

Proposed interim zoning ordinance Building Opportunity and Choices for All will have second reading at the Monday, July 18 City Council meeting.

If approved, ordinance will go into effect 30 days from Council meeting and will be in effect for a period of 365 days.
