February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black leaders, educators, authors, and changemakers who have shaped our nation. It’s also a powerful reminder of the role literacy plays in unlocking opportunity, amplifying voices, and preserving history for future generations.

From storytellers like Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou to contemporary voices inspiring young readers today, literacy has always been a cornerstone of Black history and culture. Reading opens doors to self-expression, confidence, and possibility, especially for children who may not yet see themselves reflected in books or classrooms.

At the Children’s Literacy Center, we believe every child deserves access to the tools and support they need to become confident readers. By providing individualized, literacy-focused tutoring and mentorship, we help children build not only reading skills, but also a lifelong love of learning and belief in their own potential.

Thank you for sharing your love of reading!

As we kick off a new semester, we want to extend a thank you to our incredible tutors. Your dedication, consistency, and care have set a strong foundation for our students, and the impact you’re already making is felt in every session. Because of you, children are starting the semester with confidence, encouragement, and a love of learning. We’re so grateful for all you do.

Thank you for starting the semester off strong!

Volunteer Spotlight

We are excited to shine this month’s Volunteer Spotlight on Aubree Smith, who has been tutoring with us for the past two semesters at our Fort Morgan site!

When asked what she loves most about volunteering, Aubree shared, “I love working with the kids and seeing their potential and watching them grow. The community is amazing as well!” Her dedication and enthusiasm create a welcoming space where students feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to succeed.

A fun fact about Aubree? She’s double-jointed! And one of her favorite quotes beautifully reflects her heart for service: “Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.”

Aubree, thank you for investing your time, energy, and encouragement into the students and families we serve.

Site Coordinator Spotlight

Renee has been part of the Children’s Literacy Center community for 13 years, first serving as a tutor for two years before stepping into her current role as Site Coordinator. In this role, she supports both tutors and students while fostering a welcoming environment where children feel encouraged, supported, and confident as readers.

A lifelong believer in the power of literacy, Renee’s greatest joy comes from watching students grow, not only in their reading skills, but in their confidence and enthusiasm for learning. She also treasures the meaningful connections built at the site that make it such a positive and uplifting place.

After more than a decade of service, these moments continue to remind her why this work matters so deeply.
