US Labor Force Continues to Shrink
Courtesy of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

The economy added 263,00 jobs in November. Expectations were for 200,000, so we exceeded them. But the labor force dropped another 186,000. That is bad, considering we have 4.3 million more job openings than workers to fill them.

Why it matters: We are now 102,000 workers below the pre-pandemic participation level. The labor force has shrunk for three straight months.

  • If we had the same participation rate now as pre-pandemic, there would be 3.3 million more workers in the labor force.

Be smart: Further complicating the strong topline jobs numbers is that the household survey showed the number of workers employed dropped by 138,000. Usually, the surveys of businesses (the 263,000 figure) and households are similar. No one is sure what to make of the surveys pointing in different directions. It is something to keep an eye on.

  • Also, wages rose 0.55% from October and 5.1% annually from November 2021. That is very strong.

Bottom line: The continuing strength of the labor market and wages is a Catch-22 for the Fed. Large wage gains as we are seeing are a sign that inflation remains high. It could mean continued interest rate hikes, which is why the financial markets reacted badly to what was mostly an encouraging jobs report.

Building Genuine Relationships
to Raise More Money
Courtesy of NonprofitPro.com

Have you ever wondered why some nonprofits seem to raise money again and again while others struggle? There’s a lot of talk in the space about relationships and donor-centric philanthropy. However, it's a lot of, well, talk. The reality is that creating genuine and meaningful relationships takes a lot of effort. Unfortunately, it seems to be something considered from another era.

MultiCare Announces Plans for
New ER on Highway 303
Published in the Kitsap Sun, Dec. 8, 2022

MultiCare has announced plans to open a new "neighborhood" emergency room just outside Bremerton city limits on Highway 303.

According to a news release from the health care group, the new MultiCare ER will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and be staffed by board-certified emergency physicians. The 10,500-square-foot facility will have 10 patient rooms, four observation rooms and have X-ray, ultrasound and CT scan capabilities, the announcement said. The facility will operate under Tacoma General Hospital's license, MultiCare said, noting that a groundbreaking will occur in spring 2023. A spokesperson for MultiCare said the group was looking at summer of 2024 for an opening date.

“There’s a critical need for more emergency medical services in Kitsap County,” said Mark Robinson, president of MultiCare Tacoma General and MultiCare Allenmore hospitals, in a statement. “Emergency departments across the Puget Sound are often at or near capacity. This new ED will give Kitsap County residents another option for emergency medical care.”

COVID-19 Updates & Resources
Health Officials Recommend Indoor Masking
as Respiratory Illnesses Surge
Published in the Kitsap Sun, Dec. 10, 2022

Health officials across Western Washington are recommending all individuals wear a high-quality, well-fitting mask when around others in indoor spaces as an “unprecedented” surge in viral respiratory illnesses like RSV, the flu and COVID-19 hits across the state and country, they said in a statement on Friday.

Among the swath of health officers and leaders in medical groups around Puget Sound signing on to a statement urging masking and other protective measures: Dr. Gib Morrow, the health officer for the Kitsap Public Health District.

"We can all take simple steps to protect ourselves now and enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season,” Morrow said in a statement released by the health district. “By staying up to date on vaccination and being diligent about everyday prevention habits like handwashing, you can help our community weather this wave of illness.”

Omicron-Targeted COVID-19 Boosters Now Authorized for Children 6 Months and Older
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and other healthcare providers will soon begin offering omicron variant-targeted bivalent booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 6 months and older. This follows guidance and recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  • Children 6 months through 5 years of age who received the original (monovalent) two-dose Moderna COVID-19 vaccine series are now eligible to receive a booster of the updated (bivalent) Moderna COVID-19 vaccine two months after their last dose.
  • Children 6 months through 4 years of age who have not started or completed their three-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine series will now receive the updated (bivalent) Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine as the third dose following two doses of the original (monovalent) Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Children 6 months through 4 years of age who have already completed their three-dose primary series with the original (monovalent) Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are not eligible for an updated (bivalent) booster dose at this time.

DOH urges all parents and guardians of children ages 6 months and older to prioritize vaccinating their children with the updated booster if eligible, or starting the COVID-19 vaccine primary series if they are yet to begin. Washington state is currently seeing record pediatric hospitalizations from respiratory viruses and vaccines add an extra level of protection from severe illness. Additionally, flu vaccines are available to everyone 6 months and older at provider offices and pharmacies across the state. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be safely given at the same time.

COVID-19 Support & Resources
Kitsap County Health District is now posting a regularly updated list of COVID-19 vaccine providers in Kitsap County. This list can be found here.

"I'd Rather Be Naughty Than Nice"
Thursday, December 15, 2022, 7:00 pm
Fresh off her sold-out, international tour, Witch Perfect, Tina Burner returns in a new, one-woman show I'd Rather Be Naughty Than Nice.

After years of being the Stepford Christmas Wife, Ms. Claus takes a hard candy look at her relationship with the infamous Kristopher Kringle. We finally get the back story of the North Pole’s first lady, how she met her husband, and how things aren’t always a Winter Wonderland. As the Christmas cookie starts to crumble, Ms. Claus is left with the question: would she rather be naughty than nice?

Featuring an all-new song, “I’d Rather Be Naughty Than Nice,” the show also alternates between Burner’s signature mixes and live arrangements of pop and holiday standards orchestrated by Blake Allen.
