Alderman Reilly Reports

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program Applications Open January 12

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular voluntary program in which property owners share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Thousands of Chicagoans have been a part of this popular program, taking advantage of the low cost, exceptional value, and ease of participation. Applications for this program open on Monday, January 12.

Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of participants is based on availability of funds. The program typically reaches capacity quickly, so residents are encouraged to apply early.

Applications will only be accepted via the City’s 311 system. Applicants can apply for the program by calling 311 or visiting CHI311 online. Please click here for more information regarding the Shared Cost Sidewalk Program.

State/Lake CTA Station Begins Demolition

This week, CDOT and CTA contractors began demolition work on the elevated CTA station at State/Lake. The station will remain closed to allow for demolition and a complete reconstruction of the station. The new station will feature wider platforms and new elevators, providing a safer and more accessible station for riders. As a result of the demolition, Lake St between Dearborn and Wabash will be limited to local vehicular traffic only. Sidewalks on Lake St and State St will remain open for pedestrians.

Trains running on the Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, and Purple Line Express will no longer stop at the State/Lake elevated station, but trains will continue to operate normally in the Loop. The CTA recommends riders use either Washington/Wabash or Clark/Lake stops for service. The underground Red Line station at Lake will be unaffected by the construction.

The new station is expected to open in 2029. For more information on the project, please visit statelakestation.com.

Holiday Tree Drop-Off Information

As part of the annual program hosted by the Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Park District, until Saturday, January 17, residents can drop off their holiday trees at any of the 27 locations listed here. The five bolded locations signify locations where residents can also pick up free mulch. All ornaments, lights, tinsel, and tree stands must be removed before the tree is dropped off, and any plastic bags used for transport should also be removed upon arrival.

This program diverts thousands of holiday trees from landfills and uses them to create mulch for residents and public parks.

Bridge Construction Updates

As reported in a past Reilly Report, construction continues on several downtown bridges, and Alderman Reilly has expressed his frustration with CDOT for a lack of coordination and planning. Traffic aides have been placed on Kingsbury at Chicago, Grand, and Erie to ease congestion. Stay tuned for future updates regarding traffic aides, detours, and closures.

River North CTA Bus Reroutes and Navy Pier Schedule Revision

Due to excessive congestion in River North, the westbound #66 bus no longer stops at Hudson or Kingsbury on Chicago Ave. This schedule matches that of the eastbound #66 bus. Additionally, the #66 and #8 buses will now be rerouted southbound via Wells St instead of Kingsbury St to access Grand Ave from Chicago Ave.

In response to resident concerns and at Alderman Reilly’s request, the first westbound CTA #124 bus will now depart Navy Pier at 8:10am on weekdays. This change went into effect on December 21.

A partial sidewalk closure is in place for construction on the façade at 114 E Oak. 8 feet of sidewalk clearance will be maintained, and the barricades around the construction site will be removed by February 2026.
