Board Honors 'Friendly Sons'

Hunterdon County’s Commissioner Board, at the March 15th Board meeting, honored the County’s Friendly Sons of St. Patrick ‘Irishmen of the Year’ and Parade Grand Marshals from the last few years.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic but was held this year March 13th in Clinton.

All of the men honored were recognized for their philanthropic and charitable contributions and community service.

Commissioner Board Director John E. Lanza, a brother in the Friendly Sons who actively supports the charity, stated, The brothers in the Friendly Sons are so supportive of one another, and this is something we at the county would like to recognize every time there is a parade.

Each year, they have the Irishman of the Year and the parade’s grand marshal.

We had the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state in March 2020 and that cheated the Irishman of the Year and grand marshal out of being celebrated by this board at the time, and then with the pandemic continuing one year ago (March 2021) there was no grand marshal as there was no parade again, but there was an Irishman of the Year named.”
Hunterdon Approves Health Officer Shared Service With Sussex County

Returns Shared Service Favor From A Decade Ago
Hunterdon County’s Board of Commissioners, at the March 1st Board meeting, approved sharing the county’s licensed Health Officer with Sussex County for a four-month period, returning a favor to Sussex County which had provided the same shared service for Hunterdon County ten years ago.

Hunterdon Board of Commissioners Director John E. Lanza said, “Let’s call it Hunterdon County’s good neighbor policy. It is only right that, the County being in a position to return the favor for Sussex County’s support from a decade ago, that we do so now. And Sussex is providing for the cost."

Two Exceptional Hunterdon Women Honored By County Commissioners During Women’s History Month
Photo, L to R: Ruth S. Carpenter and Helen Conkling
The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners, at the March 15th Board meeting, recognized March as Women’s History Month, honoring the achievements of women the world over, while singling out Ruth S. Carpenter, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey’s first woman Sheriff, and Helen Conkling, who served as Mayor of Glen Gardner for twelve years.

Commissioner Susan J. Soloway said, “Last year when our Board recognized women’s history month, I made a point to call attention to the County Cultural and Heritage Commission’s book entitled ‘Notable Women Throughout the History of Hunterdon County,’ and to recognize two of the 76 exceptional Hunterdon County women listed in the publication - Rose Z. Angell and Toshiko Takaezu.

For this year’s commemoration of women’s history, I wish to recognize two more exceptional Hunterdon County women: Ruth S. Carpenter and Helen Conkling.
