OCTOBER 26, 2025 NEWSLETTER

What a joy these first weeks have been! As I settle into the rhythms of St. Martin’s, I find myself noticing again and again the beauty of this community. Parishioners greet one another with genuine warmth, linger to talk after worship, and show up for one another in quiet, faithful ways. It’s a gift to witness and I’m grateful to serve as your new Associate and Chaplain.

This week, I’ve spent time visiting with parishioners, sitting in on classes, and learning more about the stories that make this community so beloved. It seems that everywhere I turn, I’ve encountered kindness, curiosity, and a desire to serve this parish together. You have made me feel immensely welcome. Thank you!

In the Gospel this Sunday, we’ll see Jesus inviting people into deeper relationships with God and with each other. I can’t help but think that’s what church at its best is: not a place where we get everything “right,” but a community learning, week by week, how to live in right relationship.

To date, 41 households of our parish family have responded to the blessings that God has given us by pledging $262,940. Thank you! Our goal is to receive $850,000 for the 2026 Operating Budget.  If you have not yet filled out your pledge card, please take some time in the coming week or two to prayerfully consider how you will partner with St. Martin’s in funding the ministry we share. We hope to have full participation by November 16, when we will celebrate the Feast of St. Martin. Pledge cards are in the Narthex and pledging online is simple and fast. Consider adding the ACH automatic payment option, details and the form are both online. Thank you for pledging!

Diocesan Retreat Schedule

The Claggett Center offers a variety of programs for adults, including retreat weekends for congregations, and space for all to come and be themselves. More information, when available, can be found here.

Upcoming Event Dates:

  • Men's Retreat: January 30 - February 1, 2026
  • Women's Retreat: February 20-22, 2026

OCTOBER VESTRY UPDATE

Hello St. Martin’s,

The Vestry met last week and wanted to share a few highlights with you.

First, we welcomed Grace to her first Vestry meeting—just three days into her new role! It was a great opportunity for us to introduce ourselves and assist in her onboarding process. We’re excited to have her with us moving forward.

Second, Mark Morsheimer presented the proposed school budget for the 2025–2026 year. He shared updates on enrollment, Mustang Club participation, and staffing changes aimed at lowering student-to-teacher ratios, especially in Preschool. It was a thoughtful and transparent discussion, reflecting the strong collaboration between Church and School.

Lauren provided updates on facilities, including the Memorial Garden. The contract is signed, and work is expected to begin soon. We’re also addressing some lighting issues in the sanctuary, and the HVAC contract has been approved, though not yet signed.

On Stewardship: as of October 12, we’ve received $262,000 in pledges; thank you to everyone who has submitted their pledge cards! If you haven’t yet, we kindly encourage you to do so. Early pledges help us plan and budget more effectively for 2026. Some cards also include gifts to the Memorial Garden and the Endowment Fund; thank you for considering these important contributions as part of your discernment.

As always, we are grateful for your continued support and prayers. Please reach out with any questions or thoughts—we’re here to listen and serve.

In prayer,

Chris Lucas

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOL

Last Wednesday, Rev. Grace joined our 4th and 5th Graders at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for a special service with MAESA (Mid-Atlantic Episcopal Schools Association).

Last week was Episcopal Schools Week, so all students learned about Episcopal Identity, with lessons on Religious Study & Education, Worship & Prayer, Service & Social Justice, and Community Life.

Closing up the week, we had a great Episcopal Schools Sunday, complete with ice cream sundaes and cake to welcome Rev. Grace. SMES students participated in every aspect of the service - they greeted, read, lead the prayers, ushered, and sang.
