--------------------------------------------------
Many of us delight in hearing a “good news” love story. You know, the kind that makes you feel happy inside? The text from Mark 8 reads as a marvelous love story, with Jesus asking his closest companions “who do people say that I am?” and Peter responding “You are the Christ.”
We read the story in three gospels: Mark, Luke and Matthew. We often call that “Peter’s Good Confession.” Perhaps you, when you joined this congregation, made your own faith proclamation, claiming “Jesus is the Christ.”

This becomes a love story for each of us (as it was for Peter) when we acknowledge Jesus is the one we want to claim and follow! And, as we do with all we love, we want to offer our best.
What is your best? The “first fruits” of your life? Using your talents to build up Christ’s body on earth? Putting time in to be Christ’s hands and feet in our community? Sharing the financial resources which are yours?

Today, I invite you to consider what it truly means to you to know Jesus as the Messiah/Christ/Savior…and let your offering be a sign of your love.

Offering prayer

God who has given us so much, here we share that abundance with your world in need. May these gifts –the ones on the plate and the many other gifts of love we share everyday –
be a visible sign of what we believe and why our faith matters. Receive these gifts and tithes, knowing we’re eager to give our best. We give them in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Creator of all the cosmos, we rejoice in you, giving thanks for the ways you encourage us with your precepts. In gratitude we pause at this time to worship you with our voices, minds and hearts. Receive our praise, grant us your peace, and give us energy to proclaim the Good News because of your love made known in Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer of Commitment

Lord, we come this day in gratitude for your commitment and to hear your words of healing love and hope. Enter our hearts and our spirits and teach us to talk with you as we follow you. Give us renewed courage and strength to be your faithful disciples.

God of mercy and of hope, sometimes it is not easy for us to realize that if we are to follow Jesus we will have to make a total commitment to his ways. We will have to actually make changes to put into practice the good news of compassionate love, and healing mercies.

Our hearts are filled with situations concerning family and friends, concerning our neighborhoods and world. We seek your healing mercies for these situations. Help us to remember that the same healing mercy is offered to each one of us. May we proclaim with our tongues what we know in our hearts as we pray the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven...
Scripture
Mark 8:27-38
27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" 28 And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." 29 He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?
37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
