Library Planning and Design Grant Awarded
The library was recently awarded the planning and design grant for $49,245 from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Together with the town approved funding for $25,000 last year, barring any unforeseen situations, we will be able to complete the feasibility study for the library. The Library selection committee is now focused on hiring the Owner's Project Manager, as required by State
Library Construction funding regulations, who will lead the committee through the study process.
Ongoing Projects Update
Palladian Windows in historic Carnegie building: Repairs and screen replacements have been completed on the upper floor of the library. They now open and they look great. The remaining work is slated to be completed in the next few weeks.

The Board of Library Trustees, Director and Staff wish to thank the Sharon Historical Commission and the Community Preservation Committee for approving these requests to repair this important historic community resource.
Sharon Public Library Veterans' Club
Next meeting will be Monday May 18 from 10-12 noon. Topic for discussion: USCG Reservist and Library Director Lee Ann Amend will speak about her experience as Port Security Officer for the US Coast Guard.
Other Library News
We are happy to welcome a new member to our team!

Jonah Smiley, a former school librarian with experience at the K - 8 and high school levels, is excited to join the Sharon Public Library staff as the new Head of Youth Services. In addition to five years experience in the public schools, he holds an MLS from Simmons College. Jonah hopes to bring his passion for games and technology to SPL's youth programming. When not at the library he can usually be found in his garden or unsuccessfully trying to teach his retired greyhound, Elvis, how to share the couch.

A Weird Massachusetts Evening
with Jeff Belanger
Thursday, June 4th at 7:30 pm
Sharon Public Library Community Room

Prepare to explore the unexplained with Jeff Belanger- one of the most visible and prolific paranormal researchers today.

He's the Emmy-nominated host, writer and producer of New England Legends on PBS, and the author of over a dozen books.

On Thursday June 4 th at 7:30 pm, he will be offering a multimedia lecture on his Bay State findings based on his popular book  Weird Massachusetts at the Sharon Public Library.

"I can't wait to bring some Massachusetts weirdness to the Sharon Public Library," Jeff Belanger said. "We'll dim the lights, talk about ghost, monsters, and oddities around our state. I've spoken on the topic of legends all over the country-there's nothing like sharing in this discussion in person."

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Sharon Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Announcing the Sharon Public Library's first Adult Summer Reading Book Bingo, where reading books can earn you a chance to win fabulous prizes from local businesses! More information coming soon...

Changes are afoot!

There are lots of changes happening at the library! We're changing how the library is organized, in order to bring the Sharon community more books and services in the most efficient manner. Some changes that you might notice the next time you're in the building:

-Fiction and Mystery titles are now interfiled (but Mystery titles will still have the Mystery sticker on the spine.) We made the decision to interfile as many authors are crossing genres when they write, meaning many times one author would have books in multiple places. This shift in the collection will allow you to find all your authors in one spot, without having to guess as to genre.

-New books will now checkout for two weeks (with one renewal) instead of three weeks (with two renewals.) Shortening the checkout time on new books means more people will be able to read a book while it's still new. This change means the holds lists will move faster, and also the library will have to purchase fewer extra copies in order to satisfy holds on high-demand books. We can purchase more overall titles for the collection, instead of having to focus our purchasing on only the most popular titles.

-Much of the CD collection will be arranged alphabetically by artist, instead of by genre (and then alphabetically by artist.) Classical music, soundtracks and opera will all remain as they are. Genre stickers will remain on the CDs, so if you're hunting for a certain sound, you will be able to find it quickly. No more wondering if a Taylor Swift CD is pop or country, you'll be able to find all of her music together!
