The program will include components on brief writing, argument, and preservation, led by experienced appellate lawyers from both civil and criminal backgrounds. Topics will include identifying issues, drafting statements of fact, structuring legal arguments, preparing for oral argument, and—of particular interest to trial attorneys—preserving specific objections for appellate review.
There will also be a segment on judicial perspectives of appellate advocacy.
Upon completion of the program, each participant will:
- Understand the components of a persuasive appellate brief.
- Plan for an effective oral argument.
- Preserve appellate issues at the trial court level.
- Understand the appellate judicial perspective
