One G-d, Many Voices: Divine Sound at Sinai- A Text Study and Performance for Shavuot
Tuesday, June 3rd at 8:00 pm, JCC in Manhattan,334 Amsterdam Ave at 76th Street
What is the texture of God's voice? What does revelation sound like? What did you hear at Sinai (and was it the same thing I heard)? In Jewish mythos/midrash, God's voice assumes center stage at Sinai--its power to captivate, its personal and collective nature, and even its absence. On this Tikun Leil Shavuot, join Rabbi David Ingber , Rabbi Jessica Kate Meyer, and Romemu Music Director Basya Schechter to dive into the sounds of revelation through midrashic storytelling, song, and study.

Join us for Shavuot Services on Wednesday, June 4th & Thursday, June 5th at 9:30 am at 165 West 105th Street. Services on Thursday will include Yizkor and will be followed by a potluck dairy picnic in the park.

Volunteer Opportunities

Romemu's Chevra Kadisha
Romemu is forming a Chevra Kadisha, a holy society, to take care of those members of the community who have just died.  The practice involves sitting vigil with the body of the deceased while reciting psalms and other prayers.  This practice is called Shmirah - guardianship.  The Chevra Kadisha also ritually washes and dresses the body in traditional Jewish burial garments through a ritual known as Tahara.  If you are interested in joining the Chevra Kadisha and taking part in this sacred work, please click here to sign up.  You must be a Romemu member to join the Chevra Kadisha.
Romemu Is Looking For Shomerim
Romemu is looking for Shomerim. A shomer or shomeret (the singular of shomerim) is a trustee or steward; someone who "watches over" or "guards." Shomerim play a unique, sacred and critical role-preparing our mishkan/sanctuary for services. Being a shomer or shomeret is about creating holy space for our community. We begin creating an atmosphere. It is beautiful, heart centered work. It is also a wonderful way to meet people, to build community, and to serve the Divine. Responsibilities Include:
  • Greeting and welcoming guests and members as they arrive
  • Setting the sanctuary for Shabbat Evening, Morning and Holiday services
  • Restoring the sanctuary after services
  • Preparing and safely storing "prayer-aphernalia" and sound gear
  • Organizing and volunteering to help at other special events
  • Participate in putting out kiddush after services
A large and active group of Shomerim allows for flexibility, back-up support, and alternates to carry out this crucial, holy work. There are opportunities to fit all schedules and interests. Your community needs you. To volunteer, speak to a shomer/et at services, email [email protected] or call the Romemu Main Office at (212) 580-4294.
Chesed Committee: How Can We Help?
Please let us know how we can help, support and comfort any member in need. If you are ill and need help with food, doctor or hospital visits or just a friendly visit, if you just delivered a new baby, if you are sitting Shiva or are having a joyous occasion (Brit or baby naming). Contact David Barrett  at 212 588-1000 or [email protected]. We are still looking for volunteers. Please contact David Barrett with your  phone, email and how you would like to serve.
