CUNY Callouts: Meet New Faces

Akkeem Polack is a communications technology major at York College. He serves on CUNY’s University Student Senate and was recently elected vice chair for legislative affairs. He has met local elected leaders, spoken at USS hearings and even served on the Finance and Administration Committee of CUNY’s Board of Trustees. He says CUNY has helped him find his voice and understand the power that he has to make a difference. In his free time, Polack hosts his own show on YC Radio titled “Melting Pot,” which provides a forum for international students to discuss topics that are relevant to their community.

What is your advice for CUNY students?

“Join student organizations and take on leadership roles, even if it’s outside your major or comfort zone. By doing that, you’ll build your network and develop skills in communication, teamwork and advocacy. These experiences are also invaluable for professional growth and will help you stand out when applying for internships or jobs.”
