2017 YEAR IN REVIEW
by Mayor Mike Vandersteen
Just over a year ago the City made some New Year’s resolutions by approving a five year strategic plan to provide residents and the business community with fiscally – responsible municipal services in an effective and responsive manner to meet the needs of our diverse community. This document contained Sheboygan’s resolutions for 2017 and the following four years. The City of Sheboygan Strategic Plan has developed six goals that advance our Mission and Vision. These goals, along with specific actions and tasks supporting them, will move Sheboygan toward our vision for the future.

Sheboygan's Intake/Raw Water Improvement Project
On June 30, 1887 Flora and J.B. Corson recorded a property transaction to the City Water Company of about 2.5 acres for the consideration of $1,200. From thence onward, water for the community has come from the same location nestled on Lake Michigan near Vollrath Park.
A key piece of infrastructure for any Lake Michigan water treatment plant is its intake pipelines, which deliver untreated water to a shoreline well. From the well, water is pumped through the treatment process until clarified, disinfected, and ready to send to the community.

North American Climate Summit
by Mayor Mike Vandersteen
Last month I attended the North American Climate Summit in Chicago and signed the Chicago Climate Charter. What was the most interesting to me was the participation of several cities from northeast Illinois and northern Indiana. This is the region that produces much of the ozone that drifts over Lake Michigan and due to prevailing wind patterns finds its way to Sheboygan County and other communities on the shore of Lake Michigan. This factor along with the location of the EPA air monitor located in Kohler-Andrae State Park has seen Sheboygan County named a non-attainment county for air quality. We need this focus on reducing emissions from the region south of Lake Michigan to reduce the ozone that reaches us along the Lake Michigan shore in Sheboygan County.
The City of Sheboygan instituted winter parking rules in the year 2000. The winter parking rules help the Department of Public Works remove snow from both sides of the street during snow and ice occurrences without calling a snow emergency. The rules also help the police department identify abandoned vehicles.

Creative ways of encouraging economic growth for Sheboygan's future
by Chad Pelishek, Director of Planning and Development
The City of Sheboygan Strategic Plan identifies one of the six focus areas as economic development. What does economic development mean? There are numerous definitions of economic development. According to Wikipedia, economic development is the process by which a nation improves the economic, political, and social well-being of its people. Those of us in the profession use the terms economic development and business development interchangeably. Business development on the other hand entails tasks and processes to develop and implement growth opportunities within and between organizations. Business development is the key tasks that are completed to encourage new development, whereas economic development includes business development plus quality of life, public infrastructure, governing, basically the other focus areas of the strategic plan.

Sheboygan hosts developer's summit

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Christmas Tree Recycling
The City of Sheboygan’s annual Christmas tree recycling pickup will begin on January 2, 2018. Trees are picked up on the same day as your garbage pickup.
Christmas trees are picked up at the CURB. There is NO ALLEY pickup of Christmas trees.
Christmas wreaths are picked up with normal curbside garbage collection.
Residents are reminded to NOT place trees in plastic bags and remove all ornaments and decorative lights. Trees are recycled by grinding them into wood chips. These chips are available to the public free of charge.
Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the Resident Drop-Off Site located at 2026 New Jersey Avenue.
Place your trees in the area normally used for branches.

A year in review on neighborhood revitalization activities
This past year, city departments continued to aggressively work at revitalizing central city neighborhoods including Kuehne Court, Maple Heights, The Flats, Franklin Park and King Park. The efforts involved numerous city departments including Planning and Development, Building Inspection, Mayor’s Office, City Administrator’s Office, Police Department, Department of Public Works, and the City Attorney’s office. Targeted code enforcement, dealing with abandoned vehicles, numerous neighborhood meetings, enhanced tree trimming, street resurfacing, relationship building with residents and neighborhood associations were just some of the activities undertaken. On a monthly basis, these city departments met to discuss strategies for neighborhoods as well as meeting with the Lakeshore Landlord Association to keep open dialog centered on issues in rental units.

City Green to provide outdoor creative space for city
Many residents have been asking what is being developed on the corner of New York Avenue and North 7 Street. This is the new arts and culture space created as a result of the 2014 Harbor Centre Master Plan. This space has been named City Green. The Master Plan identified the need to connect the Mead Public Library and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. The design on City Green was such to allow people at both the library and the arts center to be able to see each other. City Green was developed in conjunction with the Encore Apartments. The developers of Encore Apartments believe this public art space is critical to the success of their project and would not have invested nearly $10.5 million in the apartment development without the pledge of the city to develop this space.
