Benefits to recycling
Recycling is beneficial for the City of Sheboygan for a variety of reasons. It helps lower the cost of landfilling solid waste by removing recyclable material from the waste stream. Additionally, it lowers the volume of space used in landfills. The City of Sheboygan makes approximately 16,000 stops a week on the garbage and recycling routes. On average, the Department of Public Works picks up 64 tons of recycling and 240 tons of garbage weekly. By recycling the City diverts over 3,000 tons from reaching the landfill and reduces the fee to landfill waste by a yearly average of 30 percent.

I am writing to you to acknowledge the impressive accolades bestowed upon two of our members: Lieutenant Jamon Ingelse and Firefighter/Paramedic Brian Freund. Lt. Ingelse and FF/P Freund serve together at Station 2 on Sheboygan's south side.

Help prevent prescription painkiller abuse in Wisconsin

Have you heard about the nation's prescription drug abuse epidemic? Did you know it affects thousands of people every day and kills hundreds every year in our state?
It's time we take this problem head on and do something to help prevent this epidemic from getting worse. On April 29, five communities throughout Sheboygan County will be hosting Drug Take Back Day - a national initiative to get all those unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs out of your medicine cabinet and safely destroyed.

May is Older Americans Month
|
|
For many aging Americans, May is a month to be celebrated loudly and proudly. Since 1963, when President Kennedy declared the month of May as Senior Citizens Month (later renamed Older Americans Month) the meaning of the celebration has changed drastically. Since then, the average life expectancy has increased from 66-73 to 76-81. This means that on average, people are living at least 10 years longer than their parents did, and if you look around the Senior Activity Center, you'll see that many are easily and healthfully exceeding the current life expectancy. Eliminating outdated perceptions and living a long, quality life has become a mission for the aging population. Read more here

Meet the City of Sheboygan Information Technology Director
|
|
The City of Sheboygan welcomes Greg Vertelka as the new Information Technology Director. Greg started his new position on Monday, April 3, 2017.
Prior to joining the City of Sheboygan, Greg spent much of his career in large multi-national organizations, including General Electric and Johnson Controls, but has also helped grow smaller organizations into larger players in their markets. Most recently, Greg served as the Senior Vice President of IT for HSA Bank which is headquartered in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Additions to street resurfacing for 2017
|
|
In 2019 the City of Sheboygan and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be reconstructing North Avenue from North 15th Street to Calumet Drive. This joint project will cost an estimated $3.9 million dollars. The project will consist of new concrete pavement, sidewalks, new street lighting, additional landscaping, improved railroad crossing and traffic signals at the intersection of North Avenue and North 15th Street. New Code Enforcement Officer in Building Inspection
|
|
During the 2016 budget process, the Common Council identified the need to hire another part-time code enforcer similar to the position created two years ago. With bringing on two positions, it was decided to divide their duties similar to the way we currently divide the duties of the building inspectors.
The north side code enforcement officer handles the properties from Pennsylvania Avenue north to the northern city limits and the south side code enforcement officer handles the properties from Pennsylvania Avenue south to the southern city limits. The north side code enforcer is Bob Wallace, who prior to this year covered the entire city as the only code enforcer. The south side code enforcer is Dave Anderson. Dave is new to the Building Inspection division, but not new to the City of Sheboygan. Prior to accepting the position of code enforcement officer, Dave worked for 34 years in the Sheboygan Police Department retiring as a Sergeant.

Sheboygan Parks Department Celebrates Earth Day 2017
|
Earth Day events are a great opportunity to give back to your community and especially your park system.
Many groups take advantage of this occasion to help the Parks Department get ready for summer by organizing clean ups of the green spaces, beaches, and trail that encompass the 645 acres of parks within the City of Sheboygan.

Lakefront Water Safety Task Group
|
|
In August of 2016, the City of Sheboygan Board of Marina, Parks and Forestry established the Lakefront Water Safety Task Group. This task group was formed after five individuals were washed off of South Pier by wave action in two separate incidents on the same day. That day two individuals were lost and three were saved by the U.S. Coast Guard. The mission of the group was to review the report of a similar committee that was completed in March 2009, study the water rescue events that have occurred since the recommendations of the last report were implemented, and investigate new and additional safety measures for both the North and South swimming beaches and pedestrian access of the North and South piers on the Sheboygan lakefront and river. They were further charged to formulate a report with both short and long term recommendations that would reduce the potential for water-related loss of lives and the near drowning of our residents and visitors.

Hello everyone,
My name is Isabelle Buerger and I am currently working as an Intern here at City Hall. I am a senior at North High School and will be moving to the Netherlands this summer to start my degree in World Politics and International Relations. I have a great interest in being involved in politics and government one day, whether as an elected official, or as an ambassador. One day in late January I was on the phone with my dad thinking of somewhere that I could work for the last few months that I would be here and gain insightful experience on the job.
