Department of Public Works Leaf Collection Service
by Jason Blasiola, Superintendent Streets & Sanitation
Every fall the Department of Public Works (DPW) removes loose leaves from the street. The department utilizes a variety of equipment to collect leaves including a leaf vacuum wagon, street sweepers, and end loader tractors. In 2016, the DPW purchased three leaf vacuum wagons (pictured to the right). The new wagons allow for a DPW employee to ride on the wagon and control the vacuum unity that picks up the leaves off the street. In 2015 the DPW collected 1,842 tons of leaves and in 2016, there were 1,793 tons of leaves collected from the city streets.

Natural gas service infrastructure upgraded
by Mike Vandersteen, Mayor
Gas service infrastructure is being upgraded in many of the older Sheboygan residential neighborhoods. This upgrade of the gas delivery system to residential homes is being conducted in Sheboygan, Kohler, Sheboygan Falls, Elkhart Lake, and Howards Grove. I recently received calls from residents who live along South 17th Street in Sheboygan wondering why the street that was resurfaced last year is now being cut up to allow for these gas service line replacements.

Vibrant and available rental housing key to successful city
by Chad Pelishek, Director of Planning & Developmen
t
On September 14, 2017, Encore Apartments celebrated their grand opening. This marks a milestone for the City of Sheboygan. Approximately two and a half years ago, the city started the process to encourage downtown apartment development. Prior to the recent apartments downtown, Sheboygan did not see a new apartment development for 10 years. The Encore Apartments on the former Boston Store property include 81 units with rents ranging from $900 to $1,100 a month. Residents commented during this time that Sheboygan will never support these ranges of rents. As of the grand opening date, Encore had approximately half of their units rented consisting of studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms. The demographics of renters are primarily young professional or Millennials that are employed at Acuity and Kohler Company. The goal was accomplished of getting more people to live downtown as well as encouraging the young professional to live downtown.

City purchases new equipment to resurface streets
by Mike Vandersteen, Mayor
This year the City of Sheboygan purchased a new asphalt paving machine and asphalt roller. The model of the paving machine is a Bomag CR352L Paver with a Carson EZiC Screed and the model of the asphalt roller is a Bomag BW128AD. This paving machine and asphalt roller are the ideal size to complete local residential streets as well as arterial streets such as Taylor Drive. This paver allows the Department of Public Works to increase the miles of streets that can be addressed each year and reduce the cost by doing more projects in-house. The city is also able to purchase asphalt from the Sheboygan County Highway Department at a considerable discount to the open market.

Sheboygan Wastewater Treatment Facility changes operating strategy
The City of Sheboygan Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) has been a leader nationwide in the development of co-digestion and associated energy production. It was one of the first facilities in North America to achieve net zero energy status, meaning it was often able to produce more electricity through its micro-turbine system than required to operate the treatment plant. More area treatment plants have followed Sheboygan's lead and added the ability to accept and co-digest high strength wastes (HSW). This has increased competition for the higher quality wastes coming from the dairy industry and lowered tipping fees that treatment plants receive for accepting HSW. In 2011 Sheboygan was receiving over $300,000 per year for accepting HSW tipping fees and in 2016 has seen HSW tipping fees drop to only $50,000 per year.

Shoreline Metro had a "TROLLEY" good time in 2017!
During the winter of 2014 at a Business Improvement District meeting, business owners expressed an interest to connect Sheboygan's South Pier, Riverfront and Marina with the downtown. After exploring the possibility of a walk bridge over the Sheboygan River, an idea of a bus route, or trolley route, was tossed out. Fast forward six months and in June 2015, the birth of the new Trolley route, originally called the Harbor Centre Express, was born. Today, the trolley route runs Memorial Day to Labor Day, and is called The Square, appropriately named after the rebranded name of the business improvement district, Sheboygan Squared.
