My love affair with Sheboygan
by Jeanne Bogardus, Senior Activity Center Commission member
I saw Sheboygan for the first time in 2007, although I had known about it for many years. I was working in the arts in California and while back in Wisconsin for a family reunion I decided to take a side trip to visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. That visit changed my life. I decided to come back for a conference that fall. At that time I was beginning to think about retirement and moving back to the Midwest to be nearer family. But I had also lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost 30 years, and I had some "quality of life" requirements for wherever I might end up. I needed to be in a place where the arts are a vital part of the community, I needed affordable rent, I needed to be near a major city but not in it, and I needed to be by a major body of water. I wanted to live where I could walk to most of the things that were important to me: art and music, a good library, good restaurants, places to hike and bike.

Welcome Esslingen Students
The Mayors International Committee recently held a welcome dinner for the students involved in the Esslingen, Germany Middle School Exchange program. Each summer Sheboygan middle school students are paired with students from our Sister City Esslingen. This year there are five pairs of students participating in the exchange organized by the Sheboygan People to People Chapter. There are two chaperones, one from each city, who direct the activities of the students.
The first three weeks of the exchange are spent in Esslingen. Each pair of students are housed at the home of the hosting family in each city. There are group trips to see the different sites in each city as well as time spent with the host family. The final three weeks are spent in Sheboygan. This program allows the students to both be a tourist and experience everyday life in another country.

2017 Community Survey Results
In July, the City of Sheboygan completed our annual community survey. This survey provides an opportunity for citizens to provide input to city staff on initiatives designed to improve the six focus areas of our strategic plan. The survey responses nearly doubled from the previous year. Each response was reviewed carefully, and work has already begun to improve any deficiencies.
We would like to thank our citizens for time spent completing the survey as well as the numerous community partners for their efforts in promoting the survey. Congratulations to Sarah Stemper, the winner of $100 in Sheboygan County Chamber Cash for completing the survey. Please look for our 2018 Community Survey next summer.

City of Sheboygan designated as Age-Friendly Community
by Wendy Schmitz, Senior Activity Center
"A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it" said Irish author George A. Moore. As I was looking at Lake Michigan through the windows of the Yacht Club on a beautiful summer morning I reflected on this statement. My recent vacation to northern Wisconsin and the Mississippi reminded me that this state is beautiful but that view struck me vividly. Sheboygan is a location and a community that is hard to beat. Sometimes you need to get away to appreciate what you already have.

What's going on in our Great Lakes?
The Great Lakes contain one-fifth of the world's supply of surface freshwater - the greatest single freshwater resource on the planet. Yet despite their size, these lakes are surprisingly fragile and are subject to a host of complex and interacting stresses.
Join the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences Arts & Letters and the Mead Public Library Foundation for an Academy Talk with Dr. J. Val Klump exploring what is happening in the Great Lakes today and what the future holds for them and for us.

Sheboygan's Lead Water Service Lateral Replacement Program
by Joe Trueblood, Sheboygan Water Utility
Although the Water Utility has always encouraged the replacement of private lead water service laterals, WDNR made the work easier this year by providing financial incentives. During 2016, the Utility became one of the first to qualify for WDNR grant monies to replace old laterals. Following the events of Flint, Michigan, WDNR moved to make financial resources available, and the Utility qualified for $335,000 in grants for both 2017 and 2018. The funds can be used for up to three years after issuance.

Mayline Donation to Senior Activity Center

Wednesday, August 16 was an exciting day at the Senior Activity Center of Sheboygan. That was the day that 48 chairs were delivered to the Senior Activity Center, courtesy of a generous donation by the Mayline Corporation. The Department of Public Works also needs to be thanked for assisting in the delivery at very short notice.

New Life Health Food & Christian Book Store
New Life Health Food & Christian Book Store celebrated the opening of their Coffee House/Cafe. It is located along our beautiful riverfront at 644 S. Pier Drive. Not only do they have great coffee, coffee drinks, and Smoothies, they also have a nice selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as home baked goods. Their focus is on providing homemade healthy and delicious items they work hard to source locally. For example, they use Boettcher's Farms fresh eggs and grass fed (no nitrate) beef. Manning the scissors was owner Kim Boettcher, behind her is partner Dan Wilson, and to the right are helpers Perla and Armando.
