Dear #Positivity Friends,
Hello, and welcome to the Chinese Year of the Snake!
Last week, the first new moon of the lunar calendar kicked off a new year in China and many other Asian countries. The Lunar New Year is the occasion of spectacularly colorful festivals, fireworks, and feasts that draw families and communities together to summon good luck for the year ahead and salute the coming of spring. It also brings the largest crush of travel seen anywhere in the world each year, with hundreds of millions of people traveling by train and air to return to their hometowns to celebrate. And you thought making your connection in Atlanta during the holidays was hairy!
So how does that Snake fit in to all this? It’s one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, which are said to lend unique characteristics and opportunities to each new year. A Year of the Tiger, for example, is characterized by bravery, confidence, and competition. Knowing this, you might be inspired in a tiger year to make a big move in your career or personal life.
A Year of the Snake is characterized by resilience, transformation, and new beginnings. Imagine shedding your skin as a snake does to free yourself of old doubts, bad habits, or other nagging obstacles to your progress. If you can set aside our Western culture’s squeamishness about snakes, just think of the internal housekeeping you could do this year with that powerful image in mind!

Have you had it with your stuffy 9-to-5 job? Well, if you’re up for an adventure and don’t mind a major relocation, you should apply for a position at one of the British Antarctic Survey’s state-of-the-art research stations in Antarctica. Every December, the BAS posts a slew of jobs, from zoological researchers and station leaders to chefs, plumbers, and electricians. The contracts are from 6 to 18 months long, with a salary and all expenses paid, including travel, room and board, and any specialty clothing and equipment needed for the role. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to clock into a job that’s literally at the very end of the world. Talk about remote work!
As of January 1, 2025, Romania officially joined the Schengen Area, a group of 29 European countries that have opened their borders to allow European nationals free and unrestricted movement between countries. At a former checkpoint between Romania and Hungary, a symbolic border-opening ceremony was held to commemorate the occasion, with dignitaries from each country in attendance. One unexpected guest participated in the ceremony, much to the delight of the crowd: a stray dog wandered into the celebration and was the first to cross the border into Hungary as a free traveler. A former border officer saw the viral video of the dog crossing and set out to find him. Now the internet-famous dog is living his best life at the officer’s farm in Hungary, surrounded by other happy animals and a family who loves him.
The Swedeborg, Missouri school board could have named the community’s public elementary school after any number of famous Missourians—Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Stan “The Man” Musial, to mention just a few. Instead, last October they voted unanimously to rechristen the building the “Claudene Wilson Learning Center” in honor of the school’s beloved custodian. Over 30 years of service, Ms. Wilson has provided the kids with a sympathetic ear, encouraged and supported them, and celebrated their victories. Often working 12+ hour days, she’s kept the building and grounds in shipshape, and even drives the school bus when the need arises—all out of devotion to the children.
School Board President Chuck Boren, himself a former student at the school, said of the local hero: “She’s there for each and every one of them.”
