Moving Forward Together

Pastor Appreciation

This Sunday the Sheffield Church will be celebrating Pastor Appreciation Sunday.  We will be honoring Pastor Scott and Donna Skeens.  The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13,  "And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their works sake. Be at peace among yourselves."

An example of this can be found in Paul's second letter to Timothy.  Paul tells about a man with an unusual name, Onesiphorus.  2 Timothy 1:16-17 (HCSB) - May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17  On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he diligently searched for me and found me.

Onesiphorus went out of his way to find Paul, accepted him as he was, and often refreshed Paul.  It is important to note that Paul was writing from a Roman prison.  In the first part of chapter one he encourages Timothy a young pastor.  That is a role that we expect from this great preacher.   He is the mentor after all.  Then he gives thanks because of Onesiphorus.  Even the Apostle Paul needed encouragement.

I hope you will join us this Sunday as we recognize the leadership of Scott & Donna.  It will be a fun service with lots of surprises.  A box has been placed in the lobby for cards and notes of appreciation.  Let's provide a day of honor, recognition and refreshment for the Skeens family.

From Our Pastor

Aside from being Easter Sunday, it stirs us to see so many individuals and families attend the house of God. Whatever each person's reason for attending Easter service, it still moves me that people will come together as a family to hear the most wonderful story of Christ's resurrection. I have attended Easter Sunday services since I was born. Easter Sunday at Sheffield Church was the most amazing time I can ever remember. From the outset, the presence of the Holy Spirit was real, and the continued flow of the spirit touched each who had a part in the worship service. While it's good that so many attend church on Easter and see the church filled to capacity, I'm so grateful for the people who believed and surrendered their life to Jesus. This is why Christ came to die and to be raised to life again.

There are so many to thank for having an incredible Easter Sunday. It takes great planning and preparation to pull off a worship service with nearly 500 in attendance. Making adjustments to park cars a mile away from the church. Increased safety and security measures. Having enough candy to make children happy. Reconnecting with families we haven't seen in a while. These are just a few.

I want to give a huge shout out and say 'thank you' to all the church and pastoral staff for their extra hours of service. The many volunteers to serve as parking lot attendants, ushers, hostesses, greeters, praise/worship team and band, media/audio technicians, Solid Rock choir, children and nursery volunteers, student greeters, counters, prayer force warriors, preparation of refreshments, and the custodians who cleaned the church before and after Easter Sunday. Some 100 volunteers served on Easter Sunday to make it a great resurrection day to celebrate. We love you, and are so thankful for your love for God and service to the church.

Easter Sunday afternoon, Donna and I had the privilege to serve Holy Communion with the residents at The Woods of French Creek. We spoke of the resurrection, sang of Jesus and the Cross, and concluded with communion and prayer.

Time For Church

One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church,
to which he replied, "I'm not going."

      "Why not?" she asked.

"I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me, and two, I don't like them."

His mother replied, "I'll give YOU two good reasons
why you SHOULD go to church. One, you're
54 years old, and two, you're the pastor!"

7 Essentials for Growing Kids' Faith

Essential #4. Kids' faith is strengthened by relationships.

Children are an important part of the church...but many congregations haven't realized that. Some segregate children at all times and don't afford them the opportunity to learn from the entire faith community. Many churches want children to be still and quiet when they are part of a church service. Some churches never give kids the chance to worship with the entire church family.

However, when we segregate kids, we prevent them from learning from the older people in the church, and vice versa. When Jesus was in the temple, he was practicing the accepted method of teaching in his day by asking questions that provoked teachers to rethink their understanding of God's Word. Jesus wasn't asking questions just to learn their responses or obtain answers.

Children need to be involved in the overall ministry of your church. This includes worship, singing, leading praise and worship, reading the Scripture, testifying, praying, and speaking. The biblical image of God's people includes a community of people who've been redeemed regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic class. We are family. Children can worship.

(This is one of the reasons that we have different members of our congregation introducing the lesson to our children during our Dig In opening session.  If you would like to volunteer for an opening session please let Pastor Jim know.  It is easy and fun.  We will provide complete instructions.)
