KHS Rescues Hens & Chicks from
Illegal Cockfighting Operation
|
|
Kitsap Humane Society’s Animal Control officers and shelter staff rescued 70 hens and chicks from an illegal cockfighting operation in rural Port Orchard, following a law enforcement raid in which more than 300 fighting roosters were seized.
The rescued birds included 17 hens, 29 juvenile birds and 20 baby birds, most of them game birds. Four hatchlings were born during the raid, and when a KHS officer heard peeping coming from one last egg it was brought back to the shelter with its mama and her brood and hatched Monday morning at the shelter.
“This was a very difficult and dangerous operation," said KHS executive director Eric Stevens. "Our team was committed to trying to save as many birds as possible. They did rescue and save about 70 of them - and all have been adopted. Our team deserves our deepest appreciation and respect for their hard work and professionalism."

Did you know that 75 percent of lost pets never make it home? Many of those pets are brought to our shelter, and sadly, without a license or microchip, we're unable to reunite them with their families.
Licenses help pets get back home, where they belong!
Buy or renew your pet license
between June 1-June 30,
and you’ll be entered to win one
of THREE awesome prizes: A $60 gift card to Bremerton Bar and Grill, or one of two baskets for your dog or cat filled with pet food, treats, toys and Kitsap Humane Society swag!
Licensing is fast, easy and inexpensive. Best of all, it works. Just ask Ronald McClaughry of Bremerton. He's a lifelong dog person, and adopted his pup Duchess from KHS. They clearly adore each other, and make good companions.

Summer is on the way, and kitten season (and puppy season) is in full effect! May was busy, busy, busy with dozens of puppies arriving at the shelter, and more than 200 kittens in KHS foster homes … and we’re just getting started!
Hundreds of puppies and kittens will need our help (and yours!) this spring and summer. Our top “wish list” items for caring for all these cuties?

This handsome boy is Spot! Spot is an adorable pointer mix who is about 2 years old. He loves long walks and enjoys the scenery and foliage in the Pacific Northwest.
Spot is a complete love bug! He adores attention, and if you give him scratches behind his ears or on his chin, he will lean into you asking you for more!
Spot loves to play with other dogs, too! He would make a wonderful addition to any family!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Kathy!
|
This month’s spotlight is on volunteer/foster extraordinaire, Kathy Oliphant!
Kathy makes herself invaluable all over the shelter, out in the community, and at home as a Cattery Lead Volunteer, a valuable events and outreach volunteer, and a bird foster!
Kathy has been described by KHS staff as “a sassy delight,” and “one of the best parts of events season.” She can always be found bustling around the Cattery helping clean kennels and assessing special kitties, or in laundry helping make a dent in the piles of dirty blankets and puppy pads.
|
|
|
She has also fostered more than 10 birds for us! Kathy is a true KHS rock star! Kathy manages to spend dozens of hours each month at KHS and caring for our animals as a foster mom and an outreach volunteer, but she is also a devoted mother and grandmother, and spends lots of quality time with family and is involved in her church. Thank you, Kathy!
