What an incredible 48 hours it was!

Our community raised nearly $1.5 million for local nonprofits through the Kitsap Great Give and THANKS to YOU KHS raised over $66,000, exceeding our initial event goal of $40,000 and finishing in 1st Place ( $1,000 bonus prize!) for most gifts received - 391 donors!

Your generosity and support will go directly to help fund our Foster and Rescue Me programs. Two complementary, progressive, life-saving programs to ensure that each pet receives the individualized care and treatment they need during these busy summer months.

Thank you for believing in Kitsap Humane Society.

We are very grateful and very lucky to have YOU as a partner in our mission to save more animals' lives.

Petco Foundation
Kitsap Humane Society is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a $43,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our life-saving programs. Some of the Petco Foundation investment was designated to purchase a vehicle for use by our Adoption and Rescue Me programs to transport at-risk and adoptable pets around the region. That new vehicle has been purchased and is already on the road saving animals every week. It will soon get a colorful “wrap” with KHS and Petco Foundation information - if you see us out on the street please say hello! The rest of the investment will be used to help build the capacity of our growing Adoption and Rescue Me programs to help animals in our immediate community, state of Washington and even further afield. This is the second year in a row that KHS has received a large grant from the Petco Foundation. Previous funding in 2015 enabled KHS to significantly improve our adoption housing for kittens and expand our transfer and adoption capacity for kittens. KHS is so grateful for the Petco Foundation’s vote of confidence and investment in our shelter programs and commitment to lifesaving.

Adorable Adoptable
Gilbert the Great

Hello, my name is Gilbert (Intake #50461) and I’m a 7-year-old male tabby who was picked up as a stray. I’m a quiet fellow who doesn’t care much for the hustle and bustle of the shelter, but I’ve been waiting patiently for my forever home for quite some time. I love petting, chin and ear rubs, but I can be shy with new people so it may take some time for me to warm up to you. I would make a great companion for someone who has a calm, patient home. I’m FIV-positive so I need to be indoor only and either an only kitty or live with other FIV-positive cats. Did you know FIV-positive cats can live just as long as other kitties? Shelter staff are happy to answer questions about keeping me happy and healthy for years to come. You can meet me and other adoptable animals at Kitsap Humane Society, open six days a week.

Vertesia Payne

Born in California and moved to Port Orchard as a teen, Vertesia Payne is an active volunteer at Kitsap Humane Society. A mother of 3 grown children and grandmother to 3 kids, Vertesia recently added to her large family when she married Larry in 2014 and gained two stepchildren. When she’s not spending time with her family, she can be found working full-time as a recruiter for CH Franciscan - Harrison Medical Center. She also recently returned to school to obtain her bachelor’s degree in human resource management from Western Governors University. When volunteering at KHS, Vertesia enjoys dog walking, working with the transfer team and canine relaxation as well as helping at events. She recently rescued Willie, an English Springer Spaniel/Hound mix and KHS alum, from her neighbor who was unable to keep their home.
