Shelterwood is Now in Paperback!

If you're a reader who loves fascinating untold history but only reads in paperback, or you belong to a book club that does, it's time! Shelterwood is hitting store shelves in paperback with a brand new cover, featuring park law enforcement ranger, Valerie Boren Odell as she investigates a missing child case in the beautiful and mysterious Winding Stair Mountains. I'll be out and about for a few live events this month in Belton TX, DFW/Highland Park TX, and McAlester OK. I'll also be in Cedar Hill TX in March to chat with author friend Vanessa Miller about her upcoming novel (for all event details, click here).

Few things are more fun than spending time with book friends, but our PREMIER event this month in the Wingate family will be the arrival of a new grandbaby boy, due anytime now. In a crazy bit of history repeating itself, his big sister (see below) was born one the day after Before We Were Yours hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list and paperback release tour ended. That was over five years ago now, but it seems like yesterday. Only via a desperate last-minute flight rebooking and a nail-biter cab ride across New York City after Newark airport's weather closure did I make it home in time to become a grandma. I'll be staying a little closer to headquarters for this one, but we'll finish out paperback release week with an online book chat hosted by Carol Fitzgerald of Bookreporter.com. Mix up your favorite wintery beverage and join us from anywhere. Read on for details!

Shelterwood Spotted In the Wild!

In all these years, I've never spotted one of my books "in the wild" in the hands of a reader. Readers and author friends have sent photos to me, but I’ve never been in the right place at the right time. Imagine my surprise when I just happened to completely randomly catch this adorable little lady in her awesome sunhat reading on the porch. Amazing!

Take a personal tour of the story behind the story

The team at Penguin Random House asked me to throw open the research files and from that they designed this fabulous book club kit featuring historical photos, location photos, turn-of-the-century documents, book club recipes and so much more. Fry bread tacos or funeral cake, anyone? You'll find them in this personal tour of the time, place, and story-behind-the-story of Shelterwood. (If you haven't read Shelterwood yet, stop when you reach the *spoiler warnings* at the top of the last few pages. Those portions are for the book club meeting afterward.)

A few outtakes from the Shelterwood photo session in Colorado with internationally renowned photographer, Curtis W. Callaway. The photography assistant hamming it up with the boom spotlight is Mr. Wingate, earning every dollar he wasn't paid for helping out with the afternoon's endeavors.

A gathering of good words from fellow authors about Shelterwood. Hats off to the artists at Penguin Random House for bringing these together!

Just for You

A particularly lovely evening view from my loft office in the mountains of Colorado. Many of the recent books, including Shelterwood, were written here, in just this way, with the the sun moving in its timeless arc outside the window and The Huckleberry on duty at his usual observation station, alternately offering editorial suggestions, scanning for yard bunny incursions, and monitoring random stairway traffic. If there is a better way to write, I do not know it.

Here's hoping your reading time finds you in a space you love with a story that sweeps you away to unforgettable adventures in another place and time.
