Mentors Needed for the

Class of 2027

Dear Shepherds Friends,

The arc of the Shepherds year follows many calendars: the academic, athletic, financial, even the meteorological. They tend to overlap but they are also complementary. The late winter and early spring months prove the point as enumerated in this month’s newsletter.

March has been full of individual and group success stories and fun events for mentors and students. Many academic and life skills workshops and events are underway or are planned for Kolbe Cathedral students, including career and etiquette workshops, our spring College Tour for freshmen, sophomores and juniors and the Shelton Sports Night for all mentors and students. In addition, we are in the process of building our student cohorts and the mentor and financial resources for the fall incoming classes of 2027. Mentors needed!

Our message to families, students and mentors is we encourage you take advantage of these opportunities. They are part of the Shepherds’ experience and fundamental in our mission of building a foundation for future success for our students. Families, mentors and staff share in those successes.

Happy Spring!

Dan

SHEPHERDS HOCKEY NIGHT

Shepherds Hockey Night at The Bridgeport Islanders Islanders!

Thanks to Class of 2026 KCHS mentor, Bob Marchesi, over 20 Shepherds mentors and their students were able to enjoy a private tour of the Total Mortgage Arena and then watched the puck drop for the game between the Bridgeport Islanders v. Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

It was a 4-3 loss for the Islanders but a win for our group as they enjoyed exciting hockey, great food, lively music, and a lot of fun! Nyasha, Mariela and Cindy even made it on the jumbotron!

Thank you, Bob, and all the mentors who made the effort to enjoy the day with their students!

STUDENT/MENTOR HIGHLIGHT: ANAYA & ONNIE

Shepherds Student/Mentor Team Make a Big Difference

Shepherds student, Anaya is a conscientious Junior at Kolbe Cathedral who saw a great need in her community and delivered a solution to match.

"I really wanted to do some good and give my time volunteering, but I wanted it to be a mission that meant something to me...and at a place where I could make a difference," Anaya shared.

"Being a Shepherds student, Anaya knows the importance of service and volunteering and we spoke about the different options," Anaya's mentor, Onnie Pucel explained.

Being one of 5 children, the youngest at home being just 2 years old, Anaya knows the importance of having an adequate supply of diapers and wipes on hand and the challenge of the expense of the items. So, when KCHS Dean of Students, Dr. Hill talked about the Baby Center at nOURish Bridgeport, Anaya found her calling.

Anaya took it upon herself to start a "Baby Drive" at school to collect diapers and baby wipes. By making morning announcements at school and talking to students, she collected over 1000 diapers and 50 packages of wipes! This past week, Anaya and Onnie packed up the car and delivered these items to nOURish where they were gratefully received. Well done, Anaya!

STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: AMARIS

Congratulations to Kolbe Cathedral Women Basketball Team and Shepherds student, Amaris!

Amaris and the KCHS Women’s Basketball Team are headed off to the State Championship game at Mohegan Sun on Saturday, March 18th as the South-West Conference Champions having defeated Wyndham Tech on March 13 th. In that game, Amaris had a double-double, scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Congratulations to Amaris and the entire Kolbe Cathedral Women's Basketball team on becoming the SWC CHAMPS and best of luck at the State Championship!

WRITING WORKSHOP UNDERWAY

Shepherds Expressive Writing Workshop is underway for Freshmen and Sophomores

Shepherds students got expressive and even active as they participated in exercises such as acting out expressive verbs and learned about the differences between "showing" v. "telling" a story in their writing.

Students have completed 3 out of the 5 Wednesdays that focus on "Expressing Yourself Effectively!". Students will continue to develop techniques for distilling their ideas in writing in a clear and concise manner. The goal at the end of the workshop is for each student to effectively and expressively tell their personal story.
