I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium.

Community engagement is at the forefront of my mission to provide resources, events, and support for our residents and businesses. My motto of "Putting You First...Keeps Us First" will continue to be my guide. As we recognize Older Americans Month, I want to take a moment to honor the remarkable men and women who have helped shape the communities we call home. Their wisdom, resilience, and lifetime of contributions deserve our deepest gratitude, not just this month, but every day. I also want to recognize the caregivers and families who walk alongside our older residents, whose dedication and compassion make an extraordinary difference in their lives. May we continue to uplift, support, and celebrate our seniors for the immeasurable impact they have had — and continue to have — on our community.

I invite students to apply for the Broward County District 7 Office Volunteer Internship Program, an opportunity to gain hands on experience in local government while supporting impactful community initiatives. Through this program, participants can contribute to public service and outreach efforts, assist with policy research, and strengthen their communication and leadership skills in a professional setting. Applicants must be currently enrolled students with strong communication abilities and availability of up to 20 hours per week. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, and academic credit may be available. I encourage interested students to apply or scan the provided code to learn more.

Local News Highlights the Impact of the Port Everglades Career Fair

I was proud to see the Port Everglades Career Fair & Expo featured by both WSVN 7 News and NBC 6, highlighting the impact this event had on job seekers throughout Broward County and South Florida.

With many former Spirit Airlines employees and other residents impacted by recent layoffs searching for stability and new opportunities, this career fair served as a timely resource to connect people with employers across aviation, maritime, construction, hospitality, logistics, government, and more.

My goal was to help residents explore new career paths, meet directly with companies ready to hire, and take their next step forward with hope, confidence, and support.

Division Spotlight: Broward County Transit

I want to highlight Broward County Transit (BCT), a vital resource that helps residents maintain their independence and stay connected to our community. BCT provides accessible, affordable public transportation options across Broward County, ensuring that seniors can reach medical appointments, grocery stores, community centers, and more. With services like paratransit for those with mobility needs, as well as the convenient RideBCT app for trip planning and real-time bus tracking, Broward County remains committed to keeping our residents moving and supported.

21st Annual Children's BookFest 

Libraries’ 2026 Summer Learning Program kicks off Saturday, May 30, with the 21st Annual Children’s BookFest at the West Regional Library in Plantation. The free family festival runs from 10AM – 3PM, featuring music, dancing and storytelling ideal for preschool and elementary school-age children. This year’s Summer Learning Program theme, “Unearth a Story” runs through August 8 and invites participants of all ages, including adults, to fun literacy events happening at branches all over the County. Got Mosquitoes?

Summer is fast approaching, and South Florida heat doesn’t stop mosquitoes from breeding and introducing more flying biters into our region. You can help the Broward County Mosquito Section by reducing mosquito breeding ​​​habitats in and around your property. They can breed in most anything that holds water - bottles, cans, buckets, hoses, and planters, to name a few. Not only do mosquito bites hurt, but they can also potentially carry diseases like Dengue and Yellow Fever. Residents can request mosquito spraying online or by calling 311. 

Vulnerable Population Registry

With hurricane season approaching (starting June 1), Broward County encourages residents who may be vulnerable during an emergency to pre-register in the County’s Vulnerable Population Registry. The registry helps emergency responders and municipalities better understand and support residents who may be at risk due to a disability, frailty, or health condition while sheltering at home. Residents with special medical needs are also encouraged to pre-register for Broward County’s Special Needs Shelter and transportation services. Preparation ahead of time can help ensure faster, more effective assistance before, during, and after a storm.

Upcoming Repair Work in Pompano Beach

and Cooper City

Broward County's Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division will be conducting stormwater drainage repairs on Copans Road in Pompano Beach, from NW 18th Terrace to west of the CSX Railroad tracks. Work is scheduled to run from May 26 through July 2026, taking place Sunday through Thursday nights between 8PM and 6AM to minimize traffic disruption. At least one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the project.

Power Up Recycling Efforts, Broward County

Old batteries can do more harm than you think when tossed in the trash. From environmental damage to fire hazards caused by lithium-ion batteries, proper disposal is more important than ever. Broward County Solid Waste and Recycling Services encourages residents to safely recycle household batteries through its Battery Collection and Recycling Program. Residents can drop off rechargeable, automotive, and other approved batteries at participating collection sites and household hazardous waste centers throughout the County. By recycling batteries properly, residents can help protect sanitation workers, reduce landfill fires, and keep harmful materials out of the environment. View Frequently Asked Questions

Save the Date: Eye of the Storm on May 30

Save the date for Eye of the Storm, an immersive experience coming to the Museum of Discovery and Science, in partnership with the Broward County Cultural Division. This free event will explore the science behind hurricanes and extreme weather through interactive exhibits, educational programming, and hands-on activities designed for all ages. Register Here. Make a Splash Safely with Low-Cost Swim Lessons

As Broward County recognizes National Water Safety Month this May, residents are encouraged to take advantage of affordable swim lessons offered through Broward County Parks’ SWIM Central program. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages four and younger in Florida, making water safety education especially important for families. The program provides discount coupons for Learn to Swim classes for both adults and kids. City of Pembroke Pines

The Planning and Economic Development Department is responsible for coordinating the City’s housing programs available through state and federal programs. The City partners with a local vendor, Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRAFLA), to implement and process the City’s housing programs.  

• Housing Grant Programs: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer purchase assistance for very low-to-moderate-income households seeking to buy a property for use as their primary residence. Funding is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until program funds are exhausted. Assistance comes in the form of a 0% interest deferred second loan that converts to a grant if all program conditions are met.
• Sewer Connection Grant: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer a grant program to assist low- to moderate-income homeowners who are required to connect to Broward County’s sewer system. The program is administered by Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRA) on behalf of the City. CRA will manage the intake process and review applications for eligibility. This program provides eligible Pembroke Pines residents with up to $10,000 in financial assistance to cover costs.

Housing Assistance Programs

The City of Miramar's Housing Division is dedicated to providing affordable, safe, and stable housing to enhance community well-being and support low- to moderate-income families in achieving economic success and a high quality of life. The city has created the following programs to aid with housing:

• First-time Homebuyer Program: This program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to very-low and low-income first-time homebuyers. The amount of assistance varies with income level and is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until no more funding remains under the program. Assistance is in the form of a 15-year, 0% interest deferred second loan that reverts to a grant if all program conditions are met. Please contact City’s grant consultant, Community Revitalization Affiliates, Inc at (954) 939-3271 for up-to-date funding availability
• Residential Utility Connection: This program provides grant assistance up to $5,000 to connect to the City’s main sewer system. This activity benefits low income persons. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar. A second mortgage is not applied to the property.
• Rental Assistance Program: This program provides up to $8,000 to assist eligible households with the required upfront rental deposit (first and/or last month’s rent) and/or utility connection/start-ups to move into a new unit. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar and is not on-going monthly rental assistance.

Miramar offers a variety of programs and resources to help businesses succeed by fostering growth, supporting local entrepreneurs, and creating opportunities to connect with city contracts and the broader business community. From grants and financial incentives to counseling services, networking events, and streamlined permitting, the City is dedicated to making Miramar a place where businesses can start strong, expand with confidence, and thrive for the long term.

• Business Industry Development (BID) Program – Supports local, small, minority, and women-owned businesses by facilitating contracting and development opportunities.
• Contracting Opportunities – The city maintains bid opportunities, with notifications available through Onvia DemandStar. Preference points are available for local and small business bidders.
• Small Business Signage Program – Provides up to $10,000 in financial assistance for signage improvements.
• Small Business Grant Program – Offers funds to help businesses grow and expand operations.
• Vacant Storefront Cover Program – A no-cost program to install artistic coverings on vacant storefronts to improve commercial corridors.
• Vendor Registration – Businesses can register online to do business with the City of Miramar, with a brochure available to guide the process.
• Business Services – Free counseling through SCORE and the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber, commercial rehabilitation assistance for property owners, expedited permitting for certain projects, and planning/zoning support.

Getting around Miramar is easy and free with the Mira Motion Community Shuttle. Four routes connect neighborhoods to key destinations, local attractions, and Broward County Transit, offering a convenient option for work, school, appointments, and more. All routes begin and end at the Miramar Town Center Transportation Hub.

Hours: Monday through Friday

(No service on weekends or holidays)

Key Stops Include:

• Pembroke Lakes Mall

• Miramar Town Center

• Multi Service Complex

The shuttle is free to ride. Connecting to Broward County Transit may require fares.

City of Hollywood

The City of Hollywood and Broward County are committed to supporting residents through a variety of affordable housing initiatives. Both local governments offer housing assistance programs designed to increase access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or a renter facing financial hardship, there are resources available to help.

• City of Hollywood First-Time Homebuyer Purchase Assistance Program​: Qualified buyers can receive a deferred payment loan at 0% interest, 15-year term, up to $50,000 to purchase property within Hollywood's eligible Neighborhood Pride areas. • The City of Hollywood’s Rental Assistance - Eviction Prevention program, using State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds, offers help to renters who might be on the verge of homelessness due to not being able to afford their rent. The funds for the program are administered, by the City of Hollywood Community Development Division, as a grant and no repayment is required. • The Housing Rehabilitation Loan is secured by a mortgage and promissory note prepared by the City. The terms of the mortgage and note are as follows: A deferred payment loan for thirty 30 years, unless the home is sold, rented, ceases to be the primary residence of the homeowner, or is transferred or conveyed by any other means. Zero (0) percent interest. The debt is payable in full on the maturity date set forth in the Mortgage that is thirty years from the date of the signing of the Promissory Note and Mortgage. Revisiting a 2020 Moment of Homeownership and Hope

This Flashback Friday, I’m revisiting a news highlight posted on November 22, 2020, featuring a special Habitat for Humanity home dedication in Miramar.

The story captured a beautiful moment as three families received the keys to their brand-new homes after months of hard work, dedication, and sweat equity. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when community partners come together to help families build a stronger future.

Commission Meeting Highlights

I had the honor of joining Commissioner Hazelle Rogers in recognizing Caribbean American Heritage Month and celebrating the rich culture, contributions, and lasting impact of the Caribbean American community here in Broward County. During the meeting, I also recognized Mental Health Month and proclaimed Dr. Gerda Williams Appreciation Day in honor of Dr. Williams’ dedication, service, and advocacy in the mental health field. Her work continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout our community. It was a special day of recognition, culture, service, and appreciation.

Port Everglades Career & Job Expo

The Port Everglades Career & Job expo though planned way before the untimely demise of Spirit Airlines, we pivoted and included many of the major airlines inviting them to participate and they did! Special thanks also to the Port Everglades Assoc under the leadership of Lori Baer who saw the value and meaning to our residents behind the fair and represented well!
